Eternal Love Of Dream (三生三世枕上书) is based on a Chinese novel, Three Lives, Three Worlds, The Pillow Book. You can look at it as a sequel to the Eternal Love Ten Miles Of Peach Blossoms (三生三世十里桃花) which was aired back in 2017. But both stories can stand on their own although many characters do overlap. After watching all the 56 episodes and writing up the Eternal Love Of Dream episode summary, I’m now ready to do a review of the same. It has been a long journey sitting through the whole drama and you can find my verdict below.
My rating: 8.5/10

The Pillow Book Characters
Qing Qiu
Bai Feng Jiu belongs to the Fox Tribe of Qing Qiu. She is a nine-tailed red fox and Qing Qiu’s designated monarch. Her grandfather is the Fox King, Bai Zhi. Her father is Bai Yi who is the second son of Bai Zhi. Feng Jiu is doted upon by her family especially her fourth uncle, Bai Zhen, as well as a family friend and a High God, Zhe Yan. Bai Zhen and Zhe Yan are close to each other and often enjoy drinking wine together.
Bai Qian is the youngest daughter of Bai Zhi which makes her Feng Jiu’s aunt. She is about to get married to the Crown Prince of the Sky Kingdom, Ye Hua. Ah Li is Bai Qian and Ye Hua’s young son. He is smart and perceptive. Ah Li loves being with Feng Jiu and they share a warm relationship.
With her mischievous personality, Feng Jiu often gets into trouble with her father but Bai Zhen and Zhe Yan will help her to cover her mistakes. While Feng Jiu is young and naive, she can also be persistent and stubborn when she has made up her mind. On a lighter note, Feng Jiu also has great cooking skills.
Sky Kingdom
Dong Hua Di Jun is the previous emperor of the Heavenly Tribe and lives in Tai Chen Palace. He is highly experienced and revered. He defeated Demon King Miao Luo and has her sealed up for thousands of years to bring peace to all the realms. Compared to Feng Jiu, Dong Hua is much, much older and indifferent towards relationships. He appears aloof and unapproachable with his high status and very rational in his thoughts and actions… until he falls in love with Feng Jiu!
The only person who can communicate with him is Lian Song and to a certain extent, Chong Lin. Lian Song is the third prince of the current Heavenly Emperor while Chong Lin is Dong Hua’s loyal personal assistant. Lian Song is deemed to be a playboy but his only love interest is Cheng Yu. He is always trying to woo her but she misunderstands him. Cheng Yu is the Jade Pool fairy and a close friend of Feng Jiu.
The other notable character in the Sky Kingdom is Si Ming. He is in charge of the fate of the mortals. He likes to gossip and shares a fun relationship with Lian Song. Si Ming is also a good friend to Feng Jiu. So is Xie Gu Chou, the Lord of the Netherworld, who oversees reincarnations. The person who treats Feng Jiu badly is Zhi He who is Dong Hua’s foster relative. She is also in love with Dong Hua and hence, is constantly jealous of Feng Jiu.
Demon Tribe
Miao Luo is the Demon Ruler. She was defeated by Dong Hua and got sealed up in Miaoyi Chasm. The demons made a peace pact with the Heavenly Tribe but some Demon Lords are dissatisfied as over the years it became a humiliation with their loss of power. Nie Chu Yin is one of the Demon Lords who eventually pays homage to Miao Luo and does her bidding for his own selfish ambitions. He is also a fur lover and tricks Feng Jiu for her precious fox tail fur.
Xu Yang is the Demon Lord of the Red Demon Clan. He also rules over all the other Demon Lords and is a cautious person who prefers peace over war. His sister is Ji Heng who he wants betrothed to Dong Hua to secure an alliance. But Ji Heng is in love with her bodyguard, Min Su. They elope with Dong Hua’s help but their relationship comes to a tragic end. Then, Ji Heng gradually falls in love with Dong Hua instead.
Yan Chi Wu is the Demon Lord of the Green Demon Clan. He is an impatient man but sincere at heart. He has always been in love with Ji Heng and loves her unconditionally. This puts him in conflict with Dong Hua. Later on, he becomes good friend with Feng Jiu which causes Dong Hua to be jealous!
Mortal World
When Dong Hua goes to face his trials in the mortal realm, he takes on the identity of Song Xuan Ren, the Crown Prince of Li. He strikes up a trusting relationship with Ye Qing Ti, a skilled and capable man from a military family. When Xuan Ren becomes the Emperor, Ye Qing Ti is his trusted imperial guard and general. Xuan Ren’s enemy is his older brother, Song Xuan Ying, who also covets the throne.
Feng Jiu’s identity in the mortal world is Xiao Jiu. She is thought of as a man when she saved Xuan Ren during a war in a soldier’s uniform. Ji Heng has become Chu Wan as she has lost her memory. This identity is given by Nie Chu Yin and she is made a princess of Chong’an Kingdom to marry Xuan Ren for a sinister motive.
Fanyin Valley
Fanyin Valley is the home of the Biyi Bird Tribe (Inseparable King Birds Tribe in some translations). It is also the place of Aranya’s Dream. The current Queen of the Biyi Bird Tribe is Xiangli Ju Nuo. She has a son named Xiangli Meng who has a crush on Feng Jiu ever since she saved him from a mishap years ago. However, Meng didn’t get to see her face as it was veiled and hence, doesn’t know who Feng Jiu is when he finally meet her in person. Meng’s cousin is Jie Lu and she also has a crush on Dong Hua.
Aranya is a taboo subject for the Biyi Bird Tribe. She was a princess who was hated by her mother, Queen Qing Hua, and abandoned by the family when she was young. She was saved by Shen Ye then. Shen Ye is now the Archimage of the tribe. While Aranya looks like Feng Jiu, Shen Ye resembles Dong Hua. Aranya’s late father was Xiangli Que, the former King. He doted on Aranya’s younger sister, Xiangli Chang Di, who was arrogant and spoilt. Chang Di would often team up with Ju Nuo to bully Aranya.
Aranya was subsequently married off to Xi Ze to Shen Ye’s disappointment. Xi Ze is Shen Ye’s master and likes to seclude himself in the mountains. Dong Hua takes on his identity when he enters Aranya’s Dream to look for Feng Jiu’s primordial spirit. Su Mo Ye was Aranya’s master. He enters the dream at Lian Song’s request to look for Dong Hua and Feng Jiu. But he also wants to know how Aranya died.
Synopsis
Feng Jiu is saved by Dong Hua when she is attacked by a beast while entering a forbidden area of the Demons Tribe on a whim. Being brought up to repay gratitude, Feng Jiu sees it as a debt owed. So, she gets Si Ming to help her enter Tai Chen Palace as a maid to serve Dong Hua. However, Dong Hua doesn’t seem to acknowledge her presence and it is hard for Feng Jiu to get close to him especially with Zhi He’s constant bullying.
Then, an opportunity arises for Feng Jiu to help Dong Hua when Yan Chi Wu forces him to a duel after stealing the Soul Locking Jade. The innocent Feng Jiu got tricked by Nie Chu Yin in her desperation to help Dong Hua. She transforms into her fox form but is unable to return to her human form thereafter as she has given away a few of her tails. This begins a a special relationship between Dong Hua and Feng Jiu as a fox. He doesn’t know who she is but as his pet fox, she has a chance to get close to him.
At the same time, Dong Hua is always keeping an eye on Demon Ruler Miao Luo to ensure that she remains sealed up in Miaoyi Chasm. His responsibility coupled with Feng Jiu’s obsession to repay her gratitude and love for him result in a relationship that spans 3 worlds. This is a story of a romance between a young and innocent immortal and a cold and emotionless High God. It is a journey that leads to the melting of his cold heart and deep love for her. But would it be a happy ending for them with the threat from Miao Luo?
Eternal Love Of Dream Ending (Spoilers Alert!)
Eternal Love Of Dream has a happy ending. So, you can breathe a sigh of relief if you hate sad endings after sitting through such a long drama! For a brief recap of the last episode, Dong Hua and Feng Jiu manage to kill Miao Luo as Feng Jiu’s nine-tailed fox blood is able to cleanse evil spirits. But she is severely injured in the process and unconscious after being saved. When her son, Bai Gun Gun, visits her, she begins to regain consciousness as he meets his father, Dong Hua, for the first time in Episode 56. The last scene is of them being together as a happy family. Apparently, there are a few bonus scenes which are not part of the drama to emphasize a sweet and cute ending.
Yan Chi Wu And Ji Heng
Ji Heng finally sees through her own foolishness of being obsessed with Dong Hua. She realizes she needs to be herself to love someone and be loved in return and not change herself to attract him. Ji Heng also begins to value Yan Chi Wu when his life is at risk because of the threat posed by Miao Luo. So, in the end, both of them end up together to Yan Chi Wu’s delight.
Lian Song And Cheng Yu
Lian Song has always been after Cheng Yu but she doesn’t reciprocate. She starts off being annoyed with him because of past history and misunderstanding. But she gradually treats him better especially after he protects her from being punished by the Heavenly Emperor. However, their relationship doesn’t get much attention towards the end of the drama and nothing is seen happening between them.
Infighting In The Demon Tribe
The ambitious Nie Chu Yin thinks he could be more powerful by colluding with Miao Luo to free her from Miaoyi Chasm. Miao Luo needs 3 things to break free – the Soul Locking Jade, Red Qi that has been implanted into Feng Jiu, and Blood Tear which is being guarded by Xu Yang. Hence, Xu Yang is killed by Nie Chu Yin in Episode 53. Then, Miao Luo kills Nie Chu Yin because she overhears his unbridled ambition to replace her as the Demon Ruler. Yan Chi Wu also encourages her to do so by enticing her with a secret about Dong Hua.
Who Is Shen Ye And Aranya?
Dong Hua is weakened after expending his cultivation to repair Miao Luo’s seal in Episode 8. He will need to go and face his trials in the mortal world in order to quickly regain his powers. Lian Song and Chong Lin are afraid Miao Luo will stir trouble if she knows Dong Hua is not around. So, they ask God Yun Zhuang to cast his shadow into Fanyin Valley to deter Miao Luo. Shen Ye is born out of Dong Hua’s shadow. Hence, the resemblance in their appearance.
At the same time, Feng Jiu has still not repay her debt of gratitude to Dong Hua although she has left Tai Chen Palace. Hence, when Xie Gu Chou informs her of a reincarnation out of Dong Hua’s shadow, she requests him to cast her shadow to the same place. The result is Aranya is born out of Feng Jiu’s shadow. This is all revealed in Episode 49.
Shen Ye and Aranya love each other but there are a lot of misunderstandings between them. When Aranya is framed for the death of her father and subsequently dies in a war due to the evil doings of her mother, Shen Ye creates the Aranya’s Dream to make amends for his mistakes and right the wrongs done to her. He wants to bring her back to life but it is futile because souls born out of shadows will only have one life. Eventually, Shen Ye commits suicide when he learns that everything that he has done to bring Aranya back to life is in vain. Thus, Dong Hua and Feng Jiu are able to exit the dream.
Eternal Love Of Dream Review – Great Overall But…
Generally, I don’t have much to complain about Eternal Love Of Dream. It is a highly watchable production. The CGI is better than many xianxia dramas and the interaction between Dong Hua and the fox feels real. All the characters look good in their beautiful costumes and it is obvious that this is a big budget project. The most important factor is, of course, the chemistry between Vengo Gao and Dilraba Dilmurat. I dare say that without that chemistry, The Pillow Book might indeed make us all fall asleep as we follow their story.
Acting
After watching Vengo Gao as Dong Hua in Eternal Love Ten Miles Of Peach Blossoms and again in Eternal Love Of Dream, I think viewers would not be able to picture any other actor in this role. He completely nailed it to give the character the required aloofness and an aura of seniority and reverence. Dong Hua is not an excitable immortal but calm and rational. He doesn’t make a lot of movements when he talks but Vengo Gao’s expressive eyes and micro facial expressions make Dong Hua a pleasure to watch. He looks so different here compared to his role in Legend Of Fuyao.
On the other hand, Feng Jiu is a complete opposite. She is young and innocent. She dares to love and is full of life. Dilraba Dilmurat’s portrayal is spot on to give the character a level of innocence and that suits her age and lovestruck demeanor. Hence, when the 2 opposite characters interact, the chemistry is palpable due to their great portrayal of their roles.
Plot
Unlike Ten Miles Of Peach Blossoms and Love And Destiny, The Pillow Book’s story is more abstract. For some dramas, you will know what is going on even if you don’t understand Mandarin. But for Eternal Love Of Dream, you will need to listen or read the subtitles carefully to follow the story. It can get confusing especially during the Aranya’s Dream part.
Overall, the plot outline is nothing new. It is not as unique as another popular xianxia drama, The Untamed. Basically, it is about the hero using all his cultivation powers to defeat a Demon Ruler while falling in love with the heroine and trying to protect her in his own way.
Perhaps the first part is refreshing when they start off their relationship as master and pet fox. But once we get through that, the romance is kind of predictable with unrequited love in the beginning. What saves it is, as mentioned, the chemistry and unique dynamics of the couple. Many dramas are saved from being mediocre or even unwatchable this way such as Under The Power and Love Of Thousand Years.
My Verdict
Eternal Love Of Dream is a great drama and you should watch it. But certain parts can be a bore. I think one of the problems is the beginning of the romance and the couple’s time in the mortal realm mirror the story in Ten Miles Of Peach Blossoms. The difference is they have lengthen their interactions and change a bit of the story here and there in Eternal Love Of Dream. But the gist of it remains the same. So, if you have watched Ye Hua and Bai Qian’s story, you will know what Feng Jiu will eventually do to Dong Hua in the mortal realm. That is why some people would suggest we start watching from Episode 21 which is the tail end of their time in the mortal world.
Personally, I also find the story in Eternal Love Of Dream to be less compelling compared to Ten Miles Of Peach Blossoms. It doesn’t move me as much emotionally. In Ye Hua and Bai Qian’s story, there is much more angst and pain. Hence, you would feel more for the couple. The story is also more straightforward and flows better. In Dong Hua and Feng Jiu’s story, there is a vague feeling of being sidetracked at times especially during their time in the dream world.
Having said that, I would still recommend a watch for this Eternal Love Of Dream review. In fact, some people would prefer this to Ten Miles Of Peach Blossoms. The bottom line is the relationship dynamics of both couples are different. If you like a more serious tone to your romance, then Ten Miles Of Peach Blossoms should be the preferred choice. But if you like a sweeter and cuter couple, then Eternal Love Of Dream would beat the earlier drama hands down.

I want to see the story of the white hair Male lead and female. So it’s the 2 pillars and pillow book. Is that before or after 10 miles also I’ve been unable to find both of them at the same time end sub. Please where can I watch it? Thank yoi
Drama Addict says
Eternal Love is also known as Ten Miles Of Peach Blossoms (TMOPB). This is not to be confused with another popular drama series called The Eternal Love. TMOPB comes first before Eternal Love Of Dream (ELOD) which is also popularly known as The Pillow Book or variations thereof. The white hair male and female lead also appear in TMOPB but as a side couple. In ELOD, they are the main couple and it is all about their love story. TMOPB is available on YouTube while I think ELOD is available on the WeTV and Viki apps. However, it really depends on your region as there are geographical restrictions for some dramas.

I started watching Eternal Love but Eternal love of dreams popped up in my feed and. So I started watching and didn’t stop until the ending. It was easy to see the two were connected, but the Eternal love of dream felt lighter. There was something heavy for me, even in just the first few episodes of Eternal Love. I’ve thought about go back to watch Eternal Love, but I was afraid I might be disappointed in the changes, I would like to see the Mortal Realm episodes of Feng jui and Dong Hau. Does she hurt him over and over.
Saritha says
Yes me too. I loved ELOD. Btw is there any analysis on whether Dong Hua will ever regain his 90 % power he shed before entering the Dream world ?
Drama Addict says
If my memory serves me right, he will regain it when he exits the dream world.

It seems not as he was weakened when he exited aranya dream

With all due respect, please allow me to express my own sentiments. I will always love Ten Miles of Peach Blossoms. In my own reality, No story can parallel its excellent plot, portrayal, clarity, unpredictability and thrill. Its twists and turns and happy ending echo what humans normally experience (falling in love, failing, seeking, missing someone, etc)..What glues me to Ye Hua and Bai Qian is Ye Hua’s and Mo Yuan’s unchanging love and faithfulness towards Su su, Bai Qian. You can feel it from start to finish. This high behavioral consistency solidifies the story and the virtue which is missing in our generation. Perhaps it is because I don’t see it around me, I consider it a.phenomenon. This element draws me towards Ten Miles of Peach Blossoms. That’s why I can watch it over and over again. But I respect all your opinions. this also manifests the theory of relativity. We are all different and we view the same drama differently because of our uniqueness. There is really nothing to argue about..only our own views to express.
Linda Jarvis says
I agree with your assessment. I wish ELoD had kept all the same actors and plot for sake of consistency where there was overlap.
Linda says
Our hero is exactly what I would depict a dragon in human form to be. He radiates an ancient timelessness.
Jenny says
I completely agree. I love the main characters in Ten Miles of Please Blossoms. I appreciate the unconditional love for Bai Qian aka SuSu and Si Yin. I find as if Ye Hua’s character and Mo Yuan’s character is rare in dramas. Every single time when Ye Hua and Mo Yuan go out of their way for Bai Qian, or even when returning the hurt others had intentionally put on her, makes it exhilarating to watch. Especially when Ye Hua pierced Su Jing’s heart on their wedding day, and the fact that both Ye Hua and Mo Yuan ALWAYS TRUST Bai Qian, no matter what situation other people put her through. They always understand her true heart.
Ruka says
At ep.45, love it so far. Where to watch the “bonus scenes “?
Drama Addict says
There is one on YouTube which shows the 3 of them as a family on a boat ride at the end of the drama. From what I understand, Tencent had condensed the drama from 60 to 56 episodes. So, my guess is the “bonus scenes” are from the uncut version which are not released.

I have a confession…I haven’t watched TV programming in YEARS & stumbled across ETERNAL LOVE a week ago after subscribing to Netflix to watch the final season of an Oprah Winfrey program! Yet the acting, storyline,. cinematography, costumes, etc. of ETERNAL LOVE are FANTABULOUS! I’ve watched it twice!
Since I’m not up-to-date on movies & TV shows, please share, why there is not a sequel about Ye Hua & Bai Quin (if you’re aware). The cast of Eternal Love Dream is wonderful, but I’d be thrilled to watch a continuation of Eternal Love since the ending seemed to be a set-up for more of the story.
Drama Addict says
I’m not sure why there is no sequel. But Eternal Love Ten Miles Of Peach Blossoms is based on a novel. So, I guess the story of Ye Hua and Bai Qian ends there.
Marian says
10 miles was my very first cdrama, stumbled upon on Netflix when I was bored and had nothing better to do. I adore Yehua, his dedication and unshakable love touched me deeply. Everything he endured for the woman he loved had me in tears and I think this will always be 1 of my favorites. After completing 10 miles I was still so invested so was delighted when I discovered the pillow book which I also loved very much. The 2 stories are very different in that 10 miles is very serious and deeply felt and pillow book is more light hearted and cute. Both stories were very touching to me and I fully enjoyed both. I couldn’t choose one over the other as both have alot of very good points. I even overlooked the cgi and plot holes because the core of the stories were beautiful and had happy endings. Both to me are rewatchable and have really made me fall in love with cdrama. I don’t even mind having to read subtitles. To be honest I liked seeing the roles reversed in the mortal realm in pillow book so I’ve rewatched those too.

I just finish watch Eternal Love of Dream, it’’s a nice story & great special effect. I’m facinated in Mortal Realm arc, I thought it would be boring, but I like Fengjiu there, so cool with martial art & sword, Nie Chuyin magic is kind of whimsical, he can turn back time. I’m bored in every Heavenly Palace scene, I only laugh when Si Ming faint after eating sweet & sour fish. Surprisingly Yan Chiwu is my favorit character here, though he’s a Demon Lord, he’s naive, loyal, care to his friend & have a strong will. Over all I love this Xianxia 💗

I loved ten miles of peach blossoms that starting Eternal love of dream I had too many expectations that have been stuttered, currently on episode 13 am trying to be patient till 21 maybe it will pick up then as mentioned. I love the colourful costumes, the cast, will continue watching maybe as I go on it will grow to be interesting and I will come back and add on something here.
Deb Proctor says
Sorry to hear you find it boring. From episode 1 a stage is being set for the development of the characters, foreshadowing, the concept of FATE is vastly explored and tested, following the challenges one goes through because of love, plot development, etc. It sounds like opening a new book and starting from the middle but sometimes ideas and development start out slow and wind up as interesting, complex and/or no ending leaving your imagination to ponder.
Reading a book more than once can open one’s eyes to things missed on the first read. Same thing goes for films.

I just finished watching the Eternal Love (TMOPB) and the movie Once Upon a Time which also features the Story of Bai Chan and Ye Hua. After watching the latter, I just felt that some of the scenes should have included in the TMOPB, like more of Bai Chan’s Nine-Tailed Fox Form or at least the nine tails when she fights like in the movie. And the last fight scene of Ye Hua and the Demon King was much good in Once Upon a Time where he transformed into a dragon compared to the fight scene in TMOPB. Just my thoughts…

To clear up some information – these shows are based on To The Sky Kingdom ((Bai Quin & Ye Hua)
And Three Lives, Three Worlds: The Pillow Book
One of the reasons for some of the changes in the way the stories were written for each series is they didn’t have the rights to Three Lives, Three Worlds while making the first series so could not write as if there was a sequel. Also it’s difficult to schedule certain actors as a lot of the main cast are very busy
According to a website about author Tan – she is writing sequels about some of the main characters

PERSONALLY SPEAKING, YES IT IS. HOWEVER, YOU CAN NOT UNDERSTAND ETERNAL LOVE OF DREAM WITHOUT FIRST WATCHING ETERNAL LOVE!!! OTHERWISE THE BEGINNING OF ETERNAL LOVE OF DREAM MAKES NO SENSE!!! I FOUND THIS OUT THE HARD WAY, SO BELIEVE ME I KNOW WHAT OF I SPEAK!!! TRY IT, IT IS A BETTER EXPERIENCE THIS WAY!!!
Deb Proctor says
Both Eternal Love and Eternal Love of Dream are entertaining. Well done productions, kudos to cast and crew. It may make some upset to read what I write next but, Ye Hau is nothing but a crybaby. Mo Yuan is the better of the two because he is a “true man” who has achieved so much more than Ye Hua. Ye Hua is praised throughout by his foster family that he is so much better than the God of War. It’s funny to hear after the many millennia that Mo Yuan has served and protected their celestial nine heavens. In the end, the twins of heavenly father sacrificed themselves whereas the heavenly lord and high god She Yan sat on their duffs. Eternal Love of Dream was complex filled with tragedy and comedy. Dilraba did an excellent job and had some of the best lines. She was so dang funny in both series. Plus, some scenes between Si Ming and Lian Song suffering after eating the Dong Hua’s cooking. The end of the story had brought the best acting between the main characters. It was heartbreaking and Vengo Gao and Dilraba Dilmurat delivered the most emotional scene, I think, of their careers.
Deb Proctor says
There are too many misunderstandings between characters as the gossip of what spreads in the nine heavens.
For, example, Mo Yuan told the first prince that Kunlan Mountain is sacred and he could not allow for anyone to break in and kidnap whomever they want, how could he explain it to the other disciples. It winds up in a version as to how tales spread in real life. Lian Song told Ye Hua that Mo Yuan and Seventeenth were especially close and the reason why he fought with the female god who kidnapped Si Yin. Heavenly lord apparently believed Mo Yuan is not capable since he took in a little fox and gave him the fan. Here is the God of War who sacrificed himself for this celestial ingrate. In Eternal Love of Dream the one thing is characters not communicating and believing BS when they have learned otherwise. Yan feeding the into ji heng’s fantasy of Dong Hua when he knows better because of the actions and comments given him by Dong Hua. Fenjiu does not gossip and does not tell about the issues between her and Dong Hua’s interactions because she could not tell him nor anyone else so to not get back to him. Another point is the difference in the behaviors of women. QinQui women are bold, fearless, committed- not catty, vicious and despicable as the women in the Sky Kingdom.
Deb Proctor says
As stated before, both Eternal Love and Eternal Love of Dream were really good. However, the most profound scene of either was in episode 55 of Eternal Love of Deam. Have not been able to watch it after the first viewing. Too heartbreaking. Great talent from both Vengo and Dilraba.
