Till The End Of The Moon (长月烬明) or TTEOTM is a drama that you can’t missed given all the hype and promotion. There is a high expectation and anticipation for this drama since the leads are a popular onscreen couple after their earlier collaboration. The xianxia genre will also draw in viewers and this is a big budget production with much publicity. Reviews are mixed from what I can see with international viewers liking it tremendously compared to the local Chinese audience who are more critical. I have my own thoughts on this drama and you can check out my Till The End Of The Moon review below.

Synopsis
When the Devil God wreaks havoc in the realms, the immortals are powerless to stop him. The Devil God is too strong as he goes on a killing spree. To try to reverse the tragedy, a few immortals come up with the idea to send Su Su back in time to stop the man who will eventually become the current Devil God that is killing them.
Hence, Su Su is transmigrated to a time period of 500 years ago. She becomes a mortal bearing the identity of Xi Wu who is a general’s beloved and spoiled daughter. Xi Wu is married to Tantai Jin, an out-of-favor hostage prince who is weak and is often being abused by others. However, Tantai Jin is, in fact, the future Devil God. Thus, Su Su’s mission is to kill Tantai Jin before he has a chance to morph into an uncontrollable evil.
The problem is Su Su has to look for Tantai Jin’s evil bone and destroy it before he dies. Otherwise, he may turn into the Devil God after his death. Consequently, Su Su has to ensure Tantai Jin’s safety while she tries to find out where is his evil bone. As she learns more and more about Tantai Jin’s tragic life, she feels inclined to protect him. She also manages to evoke some feelings in his heart for her when she is willing to sacrifice her life to protect his. What would happen to their relationship then given their predestined fate?
Till The End Of The Moon Ending & Recap (Spoilers Alert!)
Till The End Of The Moon has an open ending which leans towards a happy one. After Tantai Jin sacrificed himself to kill the Devil God and his destructive pathway, the 3 realms became peaceful. There is a time jump 500 years later and Su Su is seen with her daughter she had with Tantai Jin. The last scene shows Tantai Jin is alive again with a smile on his face that implies that he has been reborn. But there is no confirmation of any reunion.
Tantai Jin’s Background
Tantai Jin’s life has been arranged for him before he was even born by the Devil God. It was full of tragedies with abandonment, betrayal, despair, and loss being central to his life script. The aim is to make him accumulate resentment and anger to be a powerful Devil God who will be hellbent on destruction for the injustice done to him. Because his mother’s Yiyue Tribe had an agreement with the Devil God to produce a devil fetus, he became the chosen one. Hence, Tantai Jin was born with an evil bone and without a love thread which makes him cold and unfeeling.
Tantai Jin’s father was the King of Jing who loved Tantai Jing’s mother deeply. However, his mother died during childbirth. As a result, his father blamed Tantai Jin for causing the death of his beloved wife and abandoned him. A few years later, he was sent to be a hostage prince after Sheng defeated Jing in a war.
Su Su’s Background
Su Su’s biological father is actually Di Mian. Her mother was the Goddess of Universe, Chu Huang, who was a phoenix spirit. Di Mian betrayed Chu Huang by working for the Devil God. In fact, he wanted to be the Devil God himself as he lusted for power. During the battle with the Devil God 10,000 years earlier, Chu Huang died in the process. Di Mian got mad with the Devil God for that and stabbed the latter. In return, the Devil God sealed Di Mian up in a cave where he remained for 10,000 years.
When Chief Qu of Hengyang Sect fell into the cave one day, Di Mian used his powers to protect him from the demons. To repay Di Mian, Chief Qu agreed to help him to look for his daughter who had been left behind in a spiritual egg. Chief Qu nurtured the egg until Su Su was born and became her foster father. Su Su only knew about Di Mian’s existence in Episode 32 when he returned to Hengyang Sect.
Bing Chang’s Background
Bing Chang is actually Mo Nv’s reincarnation. Mo Nv and Si Ying are sisters. They were innocent demons who were captured by the previous God of War more than 10,000 years ago. Mo Nv was subjected to extreme punishment which damaged her soul. After the Devil God killed the previous God of War, he saved both Mo Nv and Si Ying. Mo Nv was then sent to the mortal realm to recuperate her soul whereby she was reincarnated as Bing Chang. This is revealed by Si Ying to Tantai Jin in Episode 32.
Ji Wu’s Background
Ji Wu is Xiao Lin’s clone. After Xiao Lin died in Episode 25, his disciple uncle, Pang Yi Zhi, took Xiao Lin’s primordial spirit and put it in an ancient crystal lamp which can nurture it. Centuries later, a baby was formed and that is Ji Wu. However, Ji Wu has no recollection of the past unlike Mo Nv.
When Did The Couple Get Together?
The couple’s relationship spans across a few arcs as they take on different characters which include the following:
Sang Jiu And Ming Ye
Su Su/Xi Wu and Tantai Jin entered a dream state and became Sang Jiu and Ming Ye respectively in Episode 11. When Ming Ye was injured after a battle with the demons, Tian Huan used the Clam Clan’s ancient artifact to save his life. The artifact is critical to the clan’s survival and Sang Jiu, who is the clan’s princess, gave up her divine essence to replace the artifact. Hence, Ming Ye agreed to Sang Jiu’s father’s request for the marriage as repayment for the artifact and her sacrifice. They got married in Episode 12.
The couple developed a deep love for each other but their relationship ended tragically due to Tian Huan’s jealousy. They woke up from their dream in Episode 18 with Sang Jiu’s death but that experience gave Su Su/Xi Wu the tear she needed from Tantai Jin to kill his evil bone. Her next step was to get his affections so that the tear could develop spikes that could be driven into his heart.
Su Su / Xi Wu And Tantai Jin
Both Su Su and Tantai Jin were affected by their dream experience as Sang Jiu and Ming Ye respectively. After waking up, Su Su continued to be Xi Wu to make Tantai Jin fall in love with her because this was the only way to get rid of the evil bone in his heart. He loved her a little more each day and asked her if she sincerely loves him in Episode 20. Her mission made her hesitant to reply. As his feelings for her deepened, he confessed his love to her in Episode 22. But their relationship was sabotaged by Bing Chang in Episode 24 due to jealousy.
The couple reconciled in Episode 25 by agreeing to forgive each other. Su Su/Xi Wu also needed to kill Tantai Jin. So, she said that she wanted to be his queen in Episode 26. This moved Tantai Jin deeply and Su Su/Xi Wu got all the spikes she needed to drive into his heart on their wedding night. But she failed because the last 3 spikes were crushed by a protective artifact. Tantai Jin survived with a damaged heart. But he still can’t bear to kill Su Su/Xi Wu. He imprisoned and then confined her in the cold palace instead.
Su Su/Xi Wu then started cultivating her divine essence to replace Tantai Jin’s evil bone even though she would die in the process. She exchanged her divine essence with his evil bone in Episode 28 and told Tantai Jin that he is the future Devil God which necessitated her sacrifice. Tantai Jin grieved over her death and went to the netherworld to look for her in Episode 29. 400 years later, he was dying in the Nether River as he made one last effort to look for his beloved Xi Wu.
Su Su And Jiu Min / Tantai Jin
Tantai Jin was kept alive by a devil artifact crossbow at the bottom of the Nether River and delivered him out of it. Zhao You found him on a river bank and saved him in Episode 30. He became Zhao You’s disciple and given the name of Cang Jiu Min. But Jiu Min/Tantai Jin can still clearly remember his past and quest to find his Xi Wu.
Su Su awakened and found that she was back at Hengyang Sect. She learned that everything that she had experienced didn’t happen in the real world. She didn’t go back to the past but was merely in meditative retreat for 10 years. But Tantai Jin still dominated her thoughts.
The couple met again in Episode 31 and Jiu Min/Tantai Jin knew Su Su was Xi Wu in Episode 32 when she responded to the name Xiao Lin. However, Su Su wanted Jiu Min/Tantai Jin to forget the past initially before they got back together in Episode 34. He promised her that he will never become the Devil God. He also understood that she didn’t hate him when she tried to kill him in the past. She only hated the Devil God.
Su Su protected Jiu Min/Tantai Jin after he was exposed as the devil fetus and accused of killing Chief Cen’s son in Episode 35. She told everyone the story of how she had extracted his evil bone to get him off the hook. In return, he was willing to stay in Hengyang Sect with her as the divine energy of the place will suppress the evil bone in her body. They were about to get married in Episode 36 but were tricked by Di Mian who wanted the evil bone for himself.
Did Tantai Jin Become The Devil God?
Tantai Jin did become the Devil God in Episode 38. After Di Mian stole the evil bone and implanted it in himself to try to become the Devil God, Zhao You tried to stop him and was hurt by the demonic forces that entered his body. He ordered Tantai Jin to kill him before he turned into a demon which the latter did to put his master out of misery. Before Zhao You died, he told Tantai Jin that only the Devil God himself can close the destructive pathway that had been opened by Di Mian.
That is why Tantai Jin absorbed the evil bone and all the demonic forces into his body after he had killed Di Mian. In Episode 39, he figured out that only a true God can kill the Devil God. Hence, he made Su Su hate him by pretending to be cruel and hateful as he brought chaos to the world. He also forced Su Su to marry him. That hate and fear of the realms’ safety would eventually push Su Su to break through and ascend as a Goddess in Episode 40. That was what Tantai Jin wanted because she would then be able to destroy him and the destructive pathway.
Once Su Su became a Goddess, she could see Tantai Jin’s plan. She wanted to die with him but he used his Heart Guarding Scale artifact to keep her alive as he faded away after crushing his evil bone.
Side Couples
There are 2 side couples in Till The End Of The Moon:
Bing Chang And Xiao Lin
Xiao Lin loved Bing Chang deeply and got his father’s permission to marry her. But his father was afraid that the Ye family would become too powerful if Bing Chang becomes Xiao Lin’s legal wife. Hence, he only granted her a concubine status. When Tantai Jin became the King of Jing in Episode 10, his powers gradually strengthened. More and more people supported him which incensed the King of Sheng who launched a war against Jing.
Xiao Lin had no choice but to follow his father’s orders. When Tantai Jin killed the King of Sheng and conquered the kingdom, Bing Chang switched her allegiance with the aim to suck up to the new powerful ruler in Episode 21. She even helped Tantai Jin to capture Xiao Lin in Episode 23 but her devious character was revealed to all when Pian Ran found out that it was Bing Chang who stole her love thread.
Xiao Lin died in Episode 25 after Su Su/Xi Wu helped him to escape from prison. Tantai Jin found out about her plan and controlled her mind to stab Xiao Lin which eventually caused his death. Bing Chang died in Episode 29. She chose to take the poisoned porridge given to her after being captured for her various crimes of harming Su Su/Xi Wu. Pang Yi Zhi gave her the reason to die when he left her Xiao Lin’s letter which caused her much regret for betraying him.
Pian Ran And Qing Yu
Pian Ran once saved Qing Yu’s life and he fell in love with her when he met her again. She had a soldier husband in the past but had given him her love thread. But he died in a battle and her love thread was lost. Without the love thread, she would not be able to love another and have a future with him. Hence, she could only toy around with Qing Yu although she knew that he has interest in her. She told him that she is only interested in momentary pleasures rather than love of a lifetime in Episode 22. But he still confessed his feelings to her and they slept together in the same episode.
Pian Ran found out that Bing Chang had her love thread in Episode 23. She had captured Bing Chang during Xiao Lin’s attempt to save Bing Chang from Tantai Jin’s palace. Bing Chang was forced to reveal that she had met Pian Ran’s late husband by chance. Before Pian Ran’s husband died, he had entrusted Bing Chang to return the love thread to his wife. But Bing Chang took Pian Ran’s love thread instead which resulted in her being more beautiful and charming to men.
Tantai Jin extracted the love thread from Bing Chang and returned it to Pian Ran in Episode 24. After learning the whole story, Qing Yu looked for Pian Ran’s late husband tomb to pay his respects and his words touched her. Pian Ran sacrificed her life to revive Qing Yu in Episode 27 after he shielded her from Ming Lang’s arrow. Qing Yu became the ruler of Jing after Tantai Jin left for the netherworld to look for Su Su/Xi Wu.
Love Triangle
Ji Wu is Su Su’s elder disciple brother. He loved Su Su deeply and confessed to her in Episode 30. She wasn’t interested to start a relationship then but he was willing to wait for her. Su Su made herself clear in Episode 32 when she told Ji Wu about her attachment to Tantai Jin following her tribulation. Ji Wu expressed understanding but he was given glimpses of Su Su’s love for Tantai Jin in Episode 33 by a demon during a duel. He found out more about his own past as Xiao Lin when Su Su was forced to reveal everything that had happened in Episode 35 to free Jiu Min from the accusation that he would be the next Devil God.
He sought solace from Mo Nv who was Bing Chang’s reincarnation. Mo Nv is a demon and Si Ying’s sister. She told Ji Wu her identity as a demon and her past with Xiao Lin in Episode 38. But Mo Nv also saw that Ji Wu is not Xiao Lin.
When Tantai Jin was accused of killing Chief Qu and stealing the evil bone in Episode 36, Ji Wu was all eager to capture and kill him. Ji Wu even used a forbidden spell to absorb demonic powers in an effort to kill Tantai Jin in Episode 39. But during their duel in Episode 40, Tantai Jin realized that Ji Wu’s mind had been overtaken by the demonic forces inside him. He cleansed it and pushed the unconscious Ji Wu down from the sky. Mo Nv caught him during the fall and flew off with him.
Till The End Of The Moon Review – Time Travel Xianxia Style
The drama opens on a grand scale with special effects and settings that spell big budget. But the following few episodes is a little slow as they lay the foundation to the story and the male protagonist’s character. He is a powerless prince who keeps getting bullied by others. Hence, you will get this merry-go-round of abusers and people who abandoned him to put the message across that he should be sympathized. I guess it needs to be done to make his character resonate with viewers because when he fights back, he can be ruthless.
Thus, you have to sit through all that abuse and slow pacing for about 7 episodes. Then, the story picks up for the next few episodes before it enters the second arc. There are 3 or 4 arcs to the story depending on how you want to break them up. With all these arcs and timelines, this is a plot with a lot of details. The good thing about this is the story then becomes more solid. There is a reason for everything that happens. But the bad thing is you need to pay attention to all the events and dialogues. If you miss some scenes, you might end up wondering why certain things happen down the road.
Not A Straightforward Story
Till The End Of The Moon is a drama that will bring you traveling to different time dimensions and planes. Think of it as a time travel drama but in a xianxia setting. If you want to fully understand the story, you will need to keep track of the timelines which starts off as going back to the past. Then, another past in the form of a dream opens up the second arc.
In addition, there are details that you have to keep in mind to string everything together. For instance, artifacts that appear in the earlier part of the drama will show up again later on with some significance attached to them. At times, you will just end up forgetting the details of their existence when they reappear many episodes later. Perhaps I didn’t binge-watch this and the time lapse made it hard for me to remember every detail. Therefore, I would suggest that you binge-watch this if you want to follow every nuance of the story.
Basically, the screenwriters have crammed as much details as they can into the drama to make the story understandable given the complexity of the plot. To me, I think they had done quite a good job at that. It is not a straightforward story but neither is it so complicated until it puts you off. But on the downside, some questions remained unanswered and/or weren’t explored. This include the side couples’ ending which seems to have been butchered. I guess it is hard to fit everything into 40 episodes and some scenes will just have to be left out from the final edit.
Plot Freshness
For me, Till The End Of The Moon is a little different from a typical xianxia romance drama. From Ten Miles Of Peach Blossoms to Song Of The Moon, xianxia stories tend to have tribulations for the protagonists whereby they become mortals to experience life as humans. After their tribulations, they will then return to the heavenly realm and resume being an immortal.
But Till The End Of The Moon approaches this in a different way. Instead of a tribulation, it is about going back to the past to stop the male lead from becoming the future Devil God. It is also not about keeping a demon lord sealed up which is another common storyline which you would have seen in The Starry Love as well as Eternal Love Of Dream. Hence, you don’t get the feeling that you are watching a recycled plot when you are sitting through Till The End Of The Moon.
Is It A Sad Drama?
While the story is meant to be a heartfelt romance, I don’t find the drama to be particularly sad. This is because for three-quarters of it, the female protagonist has a mission to kill the male. At times, I can’t even sense that she did love him. The feeling that I get is more of sympathy because of his tragic background and guilt since she needed to hurt him. On the male protagonist’s part, his love borders on obsession to me.
In addition, there is a jealous second female lead who is always lurking around to cause trouble and the romance becomes frustrating to watch at certain stages. The couple’s relationship becomes complicated with love-hate being a major part of their story.
Therefore, this is not a romantic kind of romance drama. It has a certain level of darkness to it. I have no doubt that some viewers will still find the story heart-wrenching as it should be because fate does not allow the couple to be together. While the romance doesn’t move me greatly, the plot is riveting and the chemistry between the leads make Till The End Of The Moon highly watchable.
Acting And Chemistry
This is not the first time that Leo Luo and Bai Lu have cooperated in a project. Their sizzling chemistry in Love Is Sweet which is a modern romance drama made them many fans who had been clamoring for more from this couple. In Till The End Of The Moon, they replicated that chemistry they had earlier. It is obvious that these 2 leads are very comfortable with each other and know how to get the sparks going in their scenes together.
In terms of acting, my opinion is Leo Luo is superb as Tantai Jin which is a very complex character. It is not easy to portray Tantai Jin as he is someone cold and creepy and yet, the actor managed to make him resonate with the viewers. Leo Luo also possesses a wide array of emotions to play Tantai Jin as the character changes throughout the drama. He can look evil as a demon just as he can become pitiable as a hostage prince. The only complaint that I have is perhaps the actor is too skinny that the aura of a great king and Devil God becomes a little subdued as a result.
Bai Lu’s portrayal of Su Su is also commendable to me. There are also parts of the story whereby her character changes and she did manage the transition well. She also has to portray an inner conflict at times at the choice Su Su has to make. As a viewer, I can sense that conflict with the actress’ expressions.
My Verdict – Watch Or Rather Binge-Watch!
Till The End Of The Moon has an engaging plot that will make you addicted. Some aspects of it may be angsty and a jealous third party is such a cliche but the overall story will still make you hooked. This is because it has a unique and interesting male character that will make you want to follow his life trajectory. Because his life starts off as bleak and the romance is not destined to end well, there is this anticipation on how the situation will be reversed. So, you will get sucked into the story pretty easily.
While this is clearly a big budget drama with the beautiful costumes and high quality CGIs, the editing is off for some scenes. It is a pity that you can detect scenes are cut at times. There are also subplots that are not properly laid out to their conclusion involving the supporting characters. I presume the production team needed to cram everything into 40 episodes that some scenes were snipped off. This also made the pacing inconsistent at times. The pace is slower in the first half and much quicker as the ending nears.
However, this drama is still one of the best ones for 2023 thus far despite a few weaknesses here and there. So, for this Till The End Of The Moon review, I would rate it 8/10. Watch it for the plot as much as for the characters. It is one of those rare dramas that have both strong plot and characters to drive it. The leads’ chemistry is a bonus to make the drama worth the time.

Thank you for this. I agree with everything except that LYX is so darn hot, despite being skinny. He’s more of a gorgeous Demon Lord with a conscience of a virtuous person, not the typical muscular, psychopathic one.
The open ending makes it possible to finish the story the way the novel did. The audio clip from the special episode on Youku also tells me, it was meant to have the ending closer to the book but in the series, they only went to 500 years later, reunion will only happen after 1000 years.
I am just crushed because I think the 40 episodes limit and the way the makers decided to go around the new regulations. What they chose to keep and skip, what they chose to rush and most probably they won’t give us a second season to tie up loose ends either, it just ruins this beautiful epic masterpiece.
Still, hard to not fall in love with this.

I agree with everything except I don’t think Leo’s character was reincarnated, I think he’s watching and sleeping from another realm. ( I remember him saying he would give up his life and reincarnation is SuSu was aafe)
I wanted them to be together but…. I don’t think it had happened yet.

One of my favorite dramas of the year. Totally recommend.
I enjoyed your review, thank you. I’ve been looking around wondering if other people believe that some things were cut as well or if I wasn’t understanding things correctly. Glad it’s not just me. I think if the drama had gotten just 10 more episodes they could have fit everything in and it would have been even better. It feels like they got everything into the beginning arcs but the last arc, like in most TV shows, you run out of money or time.
All in all the team who made the show did a fantastic work and I can’t wait to see what comes next.

Loved Leo in Ashes of love and was really happy to watch him again, no doubt. Wish he had had a happy ending, though. The plot is quite similar to other dramas, and that doesn’t take away any of the charm, but the never ending misunderstanding was sooooo tiresome. Still, i am quite delighted by Leo’s performance, but his all suffering-all sacrificing characters deserve a rightful ending.

Hello there and thank you sooo much for your review and explanation on all aspects of this superb drama !! I find it so captivating – I’m still on episode 29 which feels so heart-wrenching. All your comments are so in point, couldn’t agree more. It is a complicated drama, especially for such an rookie viewer like me, I’ve never watched a Chinese fiction – fantasy drama before. Everything, I mean literally every aspect of this series is marvellous, plot, acting, costumes, visual effects, o.s.t, and a top notch production crew collaborating perfectly under the director’s guidance. I can’t stop watching it, actually I keep watching every episode over and over again to fully understanding it since the plot is quite complicated, yet so intriguing and charming but so pleasing to the eye at the same time. Really award winning, I hope it gets the admiration and recognition it really deserves. Still, I’m heart broken by this ill-fated couple, especially the male character, Tantai Jin, he suffered so much for him to be alone in the end (I know the end of the novel says otherwise). I strongly believe Xianxia should give us a second season with a happy ending, similar to the original book – or else I’ll file for a petition against the Chinese TV & Entertainment Board !!

The best drama I’ve seen in a long time and I’m already looking forward to season 2 which has 16 more episodes.
Bai Lu will definitely be back, I don’t think other actors have been chosen yet.
It is clear that I will watch the drama a second time.

So Ye Bing Chang and Tian Huan is the reincarnation of Mo Nv?

Great review! I agree that the romance was complicated and wasn’t very sad for much of it until the end, as his love was obsessive and hers was very conflicted up until the last arc. I’m glad that you also understood Li Susu/Ye Xiwu’s conflicted feelings, as many viewers kept simplifying it as “Why can’t she just trust him?” which frustrated me as it meant they weren’t paying attention to the whole story or had forgotten past events, but I think it was mostly people watching it as it came out so they did genuinely forget. I agree that it’s best to binge-watch as I did, so I didn’t have any confusion regarding character motivations or forget past details. Someone said it best about this series: “If you understand the characters’ motivations (even if you don’t like them), this series is really good and very engaging. If you don’t, you’ll just find it frustrating.”

Episode 25 made me not watch the rest of the show and gave it a thumbs down.

What an amazing drama. Taitai Jin really suffered but despite the pains, sufferings, hatred, abuses, he still decided not to be the devil god. Even when he broke his promise to Li Susu and later became the devil god, he still saved Ji Wu and sacrificed himself for peace to reign in the four realms. I really love his courage and kindness. Li Susu is not left out. She believed Cang Jumin did not kill Cheif Qu . She always choose to believe Tantai Jin, knowing that he his the devil fetus. I really appreciate her loving, kind, pure soul. No doubt that I really really love the two leads in this movie TTEOTM, the actings,, costumes, beauties, effects, plots are all amazing, but the drama is a bit complicated. The ending was not what I was expecting at all. Chinese Tv & Entertainment Board I am expecting the season two of this drama and I guess it’s not only me that want this okay.
Truly, the drama is an Award winning. The effects are superb💯✅. I really love the effects of the Mohe River. The two leads and others are so great. Guess it’s not an easy work, but you did it perfectly.
This is for the production of the movie🏆🏆(Awards)📢( recognitions it deserves)💰(prices)❤️❤️❤️ ( love from all viewers)💯✨😊

Merci
Karina

Hi everyone,
I just ended this wonderful series with a big pinch and a frustration because I don’t know how to interpret the very end by the lake and the image of tantai jin in the protective scale.
Can a beautiful soul enlighten me?
Thank you
