I decided to watch My Girlfriend Is An Alien S2 (外星女生柴小七2) mainly due to its popularity. The first season attracted quite a huge following and many were pleading for another round to the story. Frankly speaking, I didn’t watch S1 except for some clips. I have been wanting to go through it for quite some time but just couldn’t find the time with so many dramas to catch up on. Then, the second season showed up and I thought why not just go straight to the sequel and see how it goes. Well, is the drama good enough to compel me to watch the prequel too? Check out My Girlfriend Is An Alien S2 review below to find out.

Synopsis
Xiao Qi is an alien from Cape Town planet whereby its inhabitants are prohibited from falling in love and having emotional attachment. Due to her “crime” of being in love with Fang Leng, she is recalled back to the planet and is about to face punishment. However, Shi Yi stands up for her and suggests that they send her back to Earth on another mission to allow her to make up for her mistake.
Xiao Qi’s mission is to steal pheromone extracts from Fang Leng for research as the Cape Town leaders are afraid the substance could cause their subjects to fall in love. Before she is sent back, Shi Yi wipes off her memories of Fang Leng. However, Xiao Qi manages to store them in the sapphire ring that she is wearing.
On the way back to Earth, a mishap causes Xiao Xi to be separated from her robot friend and they both end up in an earlier timeline that what was intended. Thus, Fang Leng has never met Xiao Qi before while she has no feelings for him. To fulfill her mission, she has to come up with ways to gain his attention and make him release pheromones for her to collect. Over time, they begin to fall in love with each other but Fang Leng has no idea that she is an alien.
My Girlfriend Is An Alien S2 Ending (Spoilers Alert!)
My Girlfriend Is An Alien S2 has a happy ending. The epilogue shows Fang Leng and Xiao Qi having a son and a daughter after a few years. Fang Lie and Xiao Bu also has a little boy who takes after his mother. He will turn into a tortoise as his body temperature rises. They still keep in touch with Shi Yi who will send the kids presents every now and then. Fang Leng is still childishly jealous of Xiao Qi’s friendship with Shi Yi but in a good natured way. The last scene is of the 2 families celebrating the new year while watching the fireworks.
When Did The Couple Get Together?
After Xiao Qi’s relentless pursuit, Fang Leng starts to fall for her in Episode 8. She also accidentally kisses him in this episode. He becomes angry and jealous in Episode 13 when Xiao Qi seems to be getting close to Shi Yi. Fang Leng can’t bear the thought of losing her in Episode 15 and wants her to return to work for him then. He asks Xiao Qi to be his girlfriend in Episode 17. Her heart flutters and she agrees although she is also thinking that it would help her to complete her mission.
Fang Leng accidentally sees Xiao Qi’s diary in Episode 19 and thinks that she wants to leave him. An accident enables him to pretend to have amnesia in Episode 20 to get her to stay by his side. She unmasks his pretense and promises not to leave him. Xiao Qi decides to stay with Fang Leng on Earth after completing her mission in Episode 21.
In Episode 26, Xiao Qi regains all her memories of her past with Fang Leng. Her sapphire ring which she had used to store her memories shatters after she shielded him from Shi Yi’s attack. Fang Leng proposes to her in Episode 28 to which she agrees to marry him. But her energy depletion forces Fang Leng to collude with Shi Yi to ship her back to her home planet in Episode 29. Xiao Qi disagrees with their decision and tries to return to Earth. Shi Yi lets her go when he sees how much she loves Fang Leng. Xiao Qi returns back to Earth and marries Fang Leng in Episode 30.
Is There Any Breakup?
After they officially got together, there is no breakup due to misunderstanding. Even when Fang Leng learns that Xiao Qi is an alien from Shi Yi in Episode 22, he doesn’t mind that she has been deceiving him about her origin. But when Fang Leng finds out that Xiao Qi will die due to energy depletion if she continues to stay on Earth in Episode 28, he decides to collude with Shi Yi to secretly send her back to her planet.
Xiao Qi is transported to the spaceship while she is unconscious. When she awakens, she is adamant on going back to Fang Leng no matter the risk to her life. The breakup is forced upon her which she doesn’t agree with although Fang Leng is doing it for her own good. Shi Yi is moved by her love for Fang Leng and he also realizes what love means. So, he helps Xiao Qi to escape back to Earth to be with Fang Leng in Episode 30.
Is There Any Love Triangle?
Shi Yi is also interested in Xiao Qi. He doesn’t realize that it is love at first but he tries to break up Xiao Qi and Fang Leng in Episode 22. Shi Yi reveals to Fang Leng about Xiao Qi’s identity and mission with the hope that Fang Leng will leave her. This is after Xiao Qi refuses to return to their home planet with Shi Yi in Episode 21. In Episode 23, Shi Yi locks up Xiao Qi to try to change her thinking about loving Fang Leng. He tells her that they have been genetically paired up but she rather believes in feelings and emotions than a set of data.
Shi Yi absorbs Fang Leng’s pheromones to prove the Xiao Qi that she is only blinded by his smell in Episode 24. However, it fails to convince her and he reformats her mind instead to force her to be with him. Xiao Qi saves Fang Leng from Shi Yi’s attack and regains her memories in Episode 26.
Shi Yi lies to Fang Leng that the potion developed to enable Xiao Qi to stay on Earth is unsuccessful in Episode 28. He is surprised when Fang Leng is willing to sacrifice his own happiness to ensure Xiao Qi is happy and healthy in her home planet. Fang Leng’s selfless conduct makes Shi Yi realized what love is and finally acknowledges his own feelings for Xiao Qi. So, he lets Xiao Qi go and gives his blessings on their wedding day in Episode 30.
After taking over as leader of Cape Town planet, he also changes the rule on barring its inhabitants from falling in love.
Fang Leng’s Amnesia
The story behind Fang Leng’s amnesia is revealed in Episode 21 when Xiao Qi tries to mend the rift between Fang Leng and his father to cure her boyfriend’s affliction. Fang Leng’s mother died when he ran across the road on a rainy day when he was a kid. His mother was knocked down by a car when she chased after him to push him away from danger.
Following his mother’s death, Fang Leng developed selective amnesia and couldn’t recall what what happened to her. In order to protect Fang Leng’s mental health, his father made up an infidelity story to put the blame on himself for causing her death. He didn’t want Fang Leng to blame himself for the accident. Thus, Fang Leng grew up hating his father and is afflicted with a form of amnesia that makes him forget women that he has just met after a rainy day. After learning the truth, Fang Leng reconciles with his father.
Side Couples
There are 2 side couples in My Girlfriend Is An Alien S2. Xiao Bu asks Fang Lie to be together very early on in the drama so that more opportunities can be created for Xiao Qi to approach Fang Leng. When Fang Lie starts to fall for Xiao Bu, she avoids him as her own reaction towards him will cause her heart beat to increase and body temperature to rise. She will then turn into a tortoise. So, Xiao Bu asks for a breakup in Episode 21.
After Fang Leng knows that Xiao Qi is an alien, Xiao Bu also tells Fang Lie about her origin and why she avoided him in Episode 22. Fang Lie is more than happy to accept Xiao Bu. His mother is also impressed with her in Episode 27 and accepts her as his significant other.
The other couple is Dr. Zhang and Sister Chai. They become a couple in Episode 16 after Sister Chai tells Dr. Zhang that he is the right man for her. He agrees with her assessment of him and their relationship becomes public knowledge in Episode 17.
My Girlfriend Is An Alien S2 Review – Dorky Humor
To be frank, My Girlfriend Is An Alien S2 is not my cup of tea. I cannot find the humor behind the exaggerated and clownish nature of the characters. I guess if you like slapstick humor and can relate to the dorky shenanigans of the female protagonist, this would be a gem. To me, it is too silly and over the top although it is also precisely why some would enjoy it tremendously. But if you are like me and find it hard to relate to the humor, then this rom-com is really nothing to shout about given the plot holes.
I’m not saying that this drama is all awful. It is just a matter of what you see as funny or romantic. It starts off fine for me but the humor gets old after a while. For instance, the squeezing of the male lead’s chest muscles may seem amusing at first but do it a few more times and it becomes repetitive. Similarly, the close proximity shots appear romantic initially but after more than a couple of those, the magic is also gone. Basically, the plot is fairly simple despite its sci-fi nature. The success then hinges on hyping up the romance to make it appear funny and yet, romantic.
Girl Chases Guy Rom-Com
If you strip away the sci-fi element, My Girlfriend Is An Alien S2 is just one of those girl chases guy rom-coms like A Romance Of The Little Forest and Be With You. But because the girl is an alien, it allows for much more room to be silly and clownish. The plot revolves around the female protagonist’s mission to collect the guy’s pheromones and they predictably fall in love with each other.
This is a drama with no thinking allowed. You are supposed to just sit back and enjoy the comedy and love story unlike other fantasy-based romance like Love In Time. If you start dissecting the plot, you will probably tear your hair out over it. The plot holes are glaring. As an example, Xiao Qi landed back on Earth in a time period before she has met Fang Leng. But somehow Fang Leng has memory fragments of their time together from S1 which is in the future. Logically, those events haven’t occurred in S2 and hence, the memories shouldn’t exist. But they do and he will have flashbacks during his rainy day headaches.
Perhaps I missed some of the explanations but by and large, you are better off switching off your brain when you start watching My Girlfriend Is An Alien S2. This is just not the type of drama that you should seriously analyze its plot, logic, and realism.
Acting And Chemistry
Because I didn’t watch S1, I cannot comment whether the leads have improved in their acting and chemistry or otherwise. Judging by S2 alone, I think Wan Peng shines as Xiao Qi with her comical expressions which are also well-timed for each scene. She managed to show a human side to the character that she played and yet, there are bits of alien characteristics imbued in it to reflect her origin. The last time I caught Wan Peng in is in Crush which is not a typical romance drama.
Bie Hsu is less impressive to me compared to Wan Peng. His cold CEO role is nothing too challenging but his handsome face and manly muscles should make you swoon. Overall, his acting is okay although sometimes, he appeared too stiff to my liking.
The couple’s chemistry is good enough for a rom-com. I can feel the lovers vibes but neither is it off the Richter scale level. The kisses are meh for a hyped-up romance drama. So, if you are craving for passionate kissing scenes like in Love Is Sweet and Falling Into You, there is really nothing much to look forward to for this rom-com.
Must You Watch S1 First?
The short answer is no. You don’t need to watch My Girlfriend Is An Alien Season 1 to be able to follow the sequel. I didn’t watch the first season and I can understand S2 just fine. There are a few scenes from the prequel but they are not part of any elaborate plot in the second season. They are merely flashbacks of the couple so that viewers know that they were once lovers. Apart from that, there is hardly any mention of S1.
In a way, I think it is good because from what I understand, the 2 seasons are pretty similar especially the courting process. So, it might feel repetitive to watch both seasons, more so if you do it back-to-back. For me, watching S2 alone is sufficient as I don’t think I want to go through another round of the same romance. Just like The Eternal Love series, more isn’t necessarily better as things can get mundane if there is no freshness to the plot.
My Verdict – Sweet For Fans
Personally, I’m not a fan of My Girlfriend Is An Alien S2. I can understand why many viewers find it awesome though because it is a simple, lighthearted, and fluffy romance. If you like the comedy, this is already an entertaining watch. And if you also like the cuteness of the couple’s interactions, then everything will feel very sugary and romantic. These are the factors that help sell the drama. You will be treated to a lot of physical closeness of hugs and stares in the beginning which help to generate a kind of sexual tension to drive the romance.
While it is exciting initially, the repetitiveness also gets tiring for me after a while. This is where it starts to falter where I’m concerned. The humor becomes jaded and the accidental kiss and hugs just seem to fill the drama with cliches. I don’t have the patience for those and I feel that 30 episodes is a tad too long for the story. Basically, it is not a drama that you watch to get a wholesome romance but one that offers a form of romantic escapism for some stress-free time. If you just want some laughs and tune off your brain after a hard day’s work, this would probably fit the bill.
For this My Girlfriend Is An Alien S2 review, I would give it a score of 7/10. Humor is subjective but the plot just isn’t compelling enough to justify a high score especially with the plot holes and choppy story development at times. I also suspect that a lot of the hype is a carry over from the success of the first season. If you like the prequel, you will probably like this one as well. But if you are new to this drama like me, I think you will probably judge this with a more critical eye.
