After binging on a heavy xianxia drama Love And Destiny (宸汐缘), I thought it would be good to relax a little with something short and sweet like Lucky’s First Love (世界欠我一个初恋). This show is also known as The World Owes Me A First Love which is a direct translation of the Chinese title. 24 episodes is not that long to spend time on but for a pure romance drama, the stars do need to have top-notch chemistry to be able to evoke a romantic feel in the viewers. Did this drama succeed in this regard? Check out my Lucky’s First Love review below to find out more.

Xing Yun
Xing Yun is a happy-go-lucky and optimistic girl working as an animation artist in a gaming development company called TIG. She is its first employee and also known as the company’s mascot. As a long time staff, she is not only an animation artist, but also takes on the role of being her boss’ assistant. While Xing Yun is respectful of her boss, she also finds him cold and overbearing at times. Her best friends in the office are Amy and Xu Yiyi.
Xia Ke
Xia Ke is the handsome owner of TIG and Xing Yun’s boss. His parents died while he was still young. He comes from a rich family and his grandmother runs a conglomerate. However, Xia Ke rather operates his own company and not many people are aware of his family background, including Xing Yun. Xia Ke seems like a cold and demanding person on the outside but would help out people quietly without notice. He has an elder sister, Shen Qing, while He Yu and Yao Qing are his old friends from college days.
Yao Qing
Yao Qing is a project manager in an advertising and promotions company called Jiawo which has a business relationship with TIG. She has had feelings for Xia Ke since their college days but has never directly confessed to him. She is not that type to beg for love but would rather see the person she loves finds happiness.
He Yu
He Yu also works for Jiawo as a project manager and handles TIG’s promotions. Being a playboy, he doesn’t take relationships seriously until he meets Xing Yun and pursues her. He Yu also comes from a rich family but his parents are residing abroad.
Shen Qing
Shen Qing is Xia Ke’s elder sister. She runs a bakery and is very good at baking cakes. Shen Qing is a divorcee and a single mother to Xiaoxi. Her ex-husband, Ling Shan, left her after a car accident with Xia Ke. Therefore, she still blames her brother for the breakup of her family. Shen Qing has a boyfriend called Chu Nan but their relationship is not a smooth-sailing one.
Chu Nan
Chu Nan works as a banker. He loves Shen Qing and her son but faces opposition from his mother which causes them to breakup. He tries to get over the relationship and ends up dating Xing Yun.
Zhang Si Rui
Zhang Si Rui is Xia Ke’s ex-girlfriend but still has feelings for him. She also comes from a rich family with much connections. Zhang Si Rui is a capable investment executive who works for Mr. Qin. However, she can be petty and calculative to get what she wants.
Synopsis
Xia Ke first saw Xing Yun at a pet store when she brought in a stray cat for treatment. Then, he bumped into her again at a job expo and employed her on the spot as his first employee. Having worked for Xia Ke for 2 years, Xing Yun knows his likes and dislikes. They have a unique boss-employee relationship. She complains about him and sees him as overbearing at times. On the other hand, Xia Ke enjoys toying and ordering Xing Yun around.
As TIG is developing an online dating game, Xing Yun agrees to go on a blind date with Chu Nan to get ideas on love and relationship as she is inexperienced when it comes to romance. However, she has no idea that Chu Nan is her boss’ sister’s ex-boyfriend. Chu Nan and Shen Qing broke up because Chu Nan’s mother is against their relationship.
Eventually, Xing Yun and Chu Nan also parted ways because they just have no romantic feelings for one another. But they remain as friends. After the breakup, Xing Yun meets He Yu who actively pursues her. Xia Ke begins to feel uncomfortable by He Yu’s relentless pursuit of Xing Yun. Will Xia Ke finally realized his feelings for Xing Yun? Or will He Yu succeeds in wooing her instead? What will happen to Chu Nan and Shen Qing?
Lucky’s First Love Ending (Spoilers Alert!)
Xia Ke & Xing Yun
Lucky’s First Love has a happy ending with a wedding scene and a happily ever after feel. Xia Ke gradually finds himself having feelings for Xing Yun especially when He Yu keeps pursuing her. The fear of losing Xing Yun makes Xia Ke more proactive and caring instead of being cold and distant. Xing Yun also slowly opens up her heart to him as she feels Xia Ke’s change in attitude. The kiss that they shared on the ferris wheel ride is the turning point that unmasks their feelings for each other. Xia Ke also learns to open up and be honest with Xing Yun rather than keeping her in the dark over problems that will worry her. This deepens their relationship and understanding of each other. Even Zhang Si Rui can’t come in between them no matter how she tries.
He Yu & Yao Qing
As for He Yu, he doesn’t stand a chance at all with Xing Yun. She just doesn’t have any romantic feelings for him. With Xia Ke and Xing Yun being a couple, He Yu and Yao Qing end up comforting each other and spending the night together in a drunken state. He Yu finally realizes that Yao Qing has been a very important person in his life all along and goes out to pursue her for a relationship. He Yu and Yao Qing end up together and she agrees to marry him after seeing how he sacrifices himself to save her from a falling ladder.
Chu Nan & Shen Qing
Chu Nan and Shen Qing end up marrying and their problem is already settled way before the ending. They split up in the beginning because of opposition from Chu Nan’s mother who doesn’t like his son to marry a divorcee with a kid. So, Chu Nan ends up dating Xing Yun to move on from the past. But the love they have for one another did not subside. After Chu Nan breaks up with Xing Yun because of Shen Qing, his mother no longer cares about what he wants to do. When Shen Qing’s ex-husband comes back for a reconciliation, she rejects his proposal and ends up again with Chu Nan.
Lucky’s First Love Review
Lucky’s First Love is a rom-com that doesn’t give you any angst which makes it suitable for those who want something light and relaxing. However, while it is pleasant enough, I wouldn’t list it as great. Personally, I prefer Love 020 over Lucky’s First Love as the former is sweeter with better chemistry between the leads. Xia Ke and Xing Yun do have their own unique dynamics but the sweetness factor is not as great and their relationship doesn’t touch me as deeply as some other rom-coms such as Her Private Affair or What’s Wrong With Secretary Kim.
Xing Zhao Lin has a bit of a stony face when playing Xia Ke’s role. Perhaps Xia Ke’s character is aloof but I find his acting a little stiff. It doesn’t annoy me but it could be better. Bai Lu does well as a bright and optimistic young woman. I like watching her in this drama as the cheerfulness and positive attitude in Xing Yun shines through rather well.
Should You Watch Lucky’s First Love?
What saves this drama for me is the realistic plot of 2 people slowly discovering that they love each other. The kisses are realistically done and look sweet. You can find the kissing scenes between Xia Ke and Xing Yun in episodes 13, 17, and 19 or you can check out Lucky’s First Love episode summary for a recap.
Overall, I think this drama is still worth watching as it only has 24 episodes which is not too draggy. It is the type of drama that you can fit in-between heavy stuff that are much more longer and intense. It is just something breezy to occupy your time rather than a must-watch drama that would make it hard for you let go at the end of it. So, for this Lucky’s First Love review, I would say go for it if you have the time and are looking for something light to make you feel happy. But if you want a drama that can move you more emotionally, then this is not it.

Suggest some drama which is similar but more emotions
Sharon A Merriweather says
Liked the rather light hearted drama for a change. The only thing I didn’t like was the fact that chu nan vicariously started dating someone right away, and really pursuing her without regards for the other person’s feelings, and the like in a lot of Asian dramas , that person rarely pays for they carelessness or misdeeds, and even ends up with a happy ending
