Love Like The Galaxy (星汉灿烂) is another Zhao Lu Si drama after the recent Who Rules The World. Both are highly anticipated due to the leads and they naturally garnered pretty high ratings from viewers. If I have to pick one, I would choose the current one due to the better plot. There are other considerations as well which I will elaborate on in my Love Like The Galaxy review below. Basically, it is a good historical drama to binge on and it is easy to get drawn into the protagonists’ story which is more than just romance.
My rating: 8/10
Episodes: 56 / Part 1 (27 Episodes) & Part 2 (29 Episodes)
Type: Historical Romance, Palace

Synopsis
Shao Shang has been left in the care of her 2nd uncle’s wife and grandmother since she was born. Her parents were forced to leave her behind to go to war. Her aunt is a petty and jealous woman who often abuses her while her superstitious grandmother tends to listen to her 2nd daughter-in-law. Hence, Shao Shang grew up feeling abandoned without proper guidance.
15 years later, Shao Shang’s parents returned from war to find their daughter being really stubborn and rebellious. Her mother ses her as a troublemaker and tries to mold her into a more cultured young lady. As a result, Shao Shang couldn’t get along with her mother. Her desire for freedom and choice of her own path in life leads her into a relationship with Lou Yao and subsequently, Ling Bu Yi, who becomes the love of her life.
Ling Bu Yi is a coldhearted general with a scarred past. But he is smitten by Shao Shang and falls deeply in love with her. However, Ling Bu Yi is also intent on investigating a massacre in Gu City which caused his uncle’s family to be wiped out more than a decade ago. As his relationship with Shao Shang deepens, Shao Shang is inevitably drawn into the complexities of palace life and his investigation which causes friction between them.
Love Like The Galaxy Ending (Spoilers Alert!)
Love Like The Galaxy has a happy ending. Shao Shang and Ling Bu Yi cooperated to stop rebels from burning down a village and killing the 3rd Prince respectively. Shao Shang’s family also came to her aid to fight the rebels. Prior to that, they were trapped in a secret chamber through a collusion between the head rebel, Tian Shuo, and Wang Yan Ji (Lou Ben’s wife). The latter wanted revenge against Shao Shang and Ling Bu Yi as they had exposed her husband’s crime and caused him to commit suicide.
The pair nearly lost their lives as Wang Yan Ji started a fire inside the chamber in Episode 55 in the hope of making them die together with her. Shao Shang really thought Ling Bu Yi has died when an explosion occurred. The feeling of having lost Ling Bu Yi made Shao Shang realize she should forgive him and how much she loves him. The relief of seeing him still alive propelled her to reconcile with him. The fight with the rebels further cemented their relationship and trust in one another. After the victory, talks of their planned wedding also reach Emperor Wen. The last scene is of the couple and Shao Shang’s family being pictured together under the starry skies.
Ling Bu Yi’s Background
All along, Ling Bu Yi is thought to be General Huo Chong’s nephew. But he is in fact, General Huo Chong’s son. Shao Shang suspected this in Episode 46 after his mother’s companion told her about Ling Bu Yi’s cousin’s allergy towards almonds. It so happened that Ling Bu Yi developed an allergic reaction after consuming almonds that night.
Viewers will get the confirmation in Episode 48 when Ling Bu Yi exacted revenge and killed Ling Yi for murdering General Huo Chong. That is why he was always hostile towards Ling Yi although the latter is supposedly his father. He admitted to Shao Shang that he is General Huo Chong’s son, Huo Wu Shang, in Episode 49. Shao Shang then revealed Ling Bu Yi’s true identity to Emperor Wen to save him from being charged for killing his own father. She obtained the evidence of Ling Yi’s crime through Madam Chun Yu.
Madam Chun Yu could make Ling Yi marry her because she has the evidence of his complicity in the Gu City massacre. In retaliation, Ling Yi secretly fed her medicine to miscarry and become infertile. He didn’t want her to have a son and become more powerful through her threats. This discord helped the evidence to come to light.
The Deception
In Episode 50, Ling Bu Yi told the story of what happened. He and Ling Yi’s son have a similar appearance. Ling Yi cannot even tell them apart at times due to his neglect of his own child. Ling Bu Yi witnessed Ling Yi killed his father because the latter refused to surrender during a siege on the city. Peng Kun and Ling Yi colluded to help Emperor Li and caused the massacre of the city residents. They opened the city gates to allow Emperor Li’s forces to enter. This was at a time when no one could predict who would win the war between Emperor Li and Emperor Wen.
Peng Kun killed General Huo Chong’s whole clan that night to avert trouble later on with Ling Yi’s knowledge. Even Ling Yi’s own wife should have died because she is General Huo Chong’s sister. But somehow she managed to survive together with Ling Bu Yi. Instead, the soldiers killed her son. Everyone thought the boy who died was General Huo Chong’s son in a case of mistaken identity. As aunt and nephew arrived back at the capital, Ling Bu Yi took on his cousin’s identity to protect himself against Ling Yi as he was still a kid back then while his aunt had become mentally unsound.
The Gu City Massacre
The attack on Gu City has a few layers to it. The drama starts out with Ling Bu Yi pinning his attention on Lord Yong and his son, Prince Xiao. They are arms embezzlers who smuggled out army weapons to be sold illicitly and replacing them with fake ones. This is one of the reasons why Gu City fell as the weapons were substandard. Ling Bu Yi killed Lord Yong while Prince Xiao was executed in Episode 20.
In Episode 40, Marquis Yue is flushed out as another culprit that contributed to the massacre. When General Huo Chong requested for reinforcements, Marquis Yue sent his scouts into the forest to check out the miasma fog. He reported it as poisonous although it wasn’t. His intention was to delay Lord Qian’an and his army from reaching Gu City. Lord Qian’an’s failure would then anger Emperor Wen and cast aspersions on Empress Xuan. The empress and Lord Qian’an are related. Marquis Yue is dissatisfied that his own sister is merely a consort despite being Emperor Wen’s childhood sweetheart. As a result of his wrongdoing, Emperor Wen stripped Marquis Yue of his titles and banished him to the border.
Despite the risk, Lord Qian’an went into the forest anyway and got killed. As there was no poisonous fog as confirmed by Marquis Yue, the suspicion now fell on Peng Kun who was Lord Qian’an’s Vice General. By killing Lord Qian’an, Peng Kun will be able to command the former’s army. Ling Bu Yi captured Peng Kun in Episode 43 following a failed rebellion. Peng Kun died in prison in Episode 47. Ling Yi silenced him to cover his own tracks. With the last witness gone and the investigation coming to a dead end, Ling Bu Yi killed Ling Yi in Episode 48.
When Did The Couple Get Together?
Shao Shang and Ling Bu Yi met in Episode 6 when he carried her to safety during a fire. He was drawn to her at first sight. But Ling Bu Yi’s quest for revenge made him hold back. Lou Yao was also attracted to Shao Shang and pursued her after his fiancee, Zhao Jun, broke off their engagement to marry Prince Xiao. He asked for Shao Shang’s hand in marriage in Episode 14. Shao Shang agreed because they seemed to share the same aspirations after experiencing some hardship together. She saw him as someone who could give her the freedom she wanted rather than a man she loves.
However, Shao Shang decided to break the betrothal in Episode 21. This is because Zhao Jun’s father, General He, made a dying wish to have his daughter being taken care of by Lou Yao. He and his elder sons were killed when he refused to align himself with Prince Xiao’s family to rebel against Emperor Wen and fought them off valiantly. Hence, Shao Shang was pressured to return Lou Yao to Zhao Jun. She eventually decided to do so and convinced Lou Yao that their relationship is insignificant compared to General He’s sacrifice.
Ling Bu Yi publicly proposed to Shao Shang and asked Emperor Wen to grant him the marriage in Episode 24. She felt humiliated when her parents magnified her inadequacies to Emperor Wen in the quest to reject the marriage order. Hence, when Emperor Wen gave her a choice, she agreed to the proposal. Shao Shang realized how much Ling Bu Yi loves her and was certain about marrying him in Episode 27. They got engaged in Episode 34. She confessed her love to him in Episode 38 after seeing him getting punished by Emperor Wen because of her.
Is There Any Breakup?
Shao Shang decided to break up with Ling Bu Yi in Episode 50. She knew he is General Huo Chong’s son and wanted revenge. She gave him a chance to tell her the truth but he failed to do so. Ling Bu Yi killed Ling Yi just 2 days before their wedding. He did so after Ling Yi killed the last witness who could reveal the truth about what happened at Gu City. Ling Bu Yi exacted his revenge before the wedding to avoid implicating Shao Shang and her family. He knew he would be arrested and executed for his actions as he has no proof of Ling Yi’s crime.
Ling Bu Yi was prepared to die to get his revenge and he did drop himself off a cliff when pursued by government troops in Episode 49. But he survived and there is evidence on Ling Yi’s guilt. After the case was settled, Shao Shang found herself unable to forgive Ling Bu Yi for his deception and abandonment. While she has learned to open up her heart to him as he wanted, he has failed to do the same for her. He took advantage of some events that happened to her in his quest for revenge without telling her. She also felt abandoned because he knew he could die for his actions and hence, leaving her alone. She wasn’t afraid of dying with him but she couldn’t accept being kept in the dark.
After the breakup, Ling Bu Yi stationed himself in the North West border. Shao Shang lived in seclusion at Chang Qiu Palace with Empress Xuan. They met again 5 years later in Episode 52 when Ling Bu Yi returned to the capital. The couple reconciled in Episode 55 after a near death experience.
Is There A Love Triangle?
The love triangle aspect is not really explored in the drama. Shao Shang’s relationship with Ling Bu Yi didn’t start until after she has broken off her betrothal to Lou Yao. She didn’t really know what love is at that point anyway due to her bitter childhood experience.
Yuan Shan Jian also has feelings for Shao Shang but his own parents’ unhappy marriage made him wary of having deep affections for another. Thus, he masked his feelings for her by constantly being argumentative instead. He provided Shao Shang some level of comfort and friendship after she broke up with Ling Bu Yi with his consistent presence.
Yuan Shan Jian didn’t confess to Shao Shang until Episode 52 after she has separated with Ling Bu Yi for 5 years. He offered to marry her despite her admission that she still loves Ling Bu Yi. As Shao Shang couldn’t return his feelings, the proposal fell through.
Ling Bu Yi’s admirers include Princess Yu Chang and Lady Luo. But he wasn’t interested in any of them. Princess Yu Chang’s insistence on marrying Ling Bu Yi got too much until her grandfather forced her to choose between becoming a nun and marrying another. She ended up as a nun.
Lady Luo was in love with Ling Bu Yi since she was young. She thought they could be together until Shao Shang appeared. Thus, Lady Luo ended up being married off to a man in the North West. When Ling Bu Yi was stationed there after Shao Shang broke up with him, Lady Luo killed her husband to try to be with him. But Ling Bu Yi has no interest in her at all. She ended up falling off a cliff after trying to kill Shao Shang due to jealousy in Episode 53.

Love Like The Galaxy Review – Not A Typical Romance
I don’t see Love Like The Galaxy as a typical romance drama especially in the first half. This is not a boy-meets-girl scenario with a lot of wooing and a romantic proposal. In fact, the girl was getting to know another man and wanted to marry him in the first quarter of the drama. This part of the story lasted about 8 to 10 episodes. It may seem unromantic for the female protagonist to have 2 relationships in a drama but the plot is a refreshing one up to that point.
Her second relationship with the male protagonist is where she learned how to love and be loved. This is not a contract or forced marriage plot that you commonly get. The girl was actually given a choice whether to accept the guy’s sudden proposal. She didn’t love him then but made the decision to accept based on practical considerations. All the happenings that drove her decisions are well-laid out. Rather than relying on sweetness and chemistry to drive the romance like in My Sassy Princess and General’s Lady, Love Like The Galaxy possesses a strong foundation to the story for viewers to understand and feel for the main character instead.
No Toxic Palace Politics
If you like elaborate schemings and power plays, Love Like The Galaxy is not the drama for it. It is hardly in the mold of Sword Snow Stride or Nirvana In Fire. The Emperor is a funny man at times with a good heart rather than the usual suspicious ruler who thinks everyone is after his throne. The Empress and the Noble Consort are not power crazy and vindictive women. In fact, they get along for a change compared to the typical palace dramas.
Even the investigation aspect is condensed and executed in a simple manner. So, this is not another Luoyang. There is some curiosity as to what happened in the past but this isn’t a thriller. Instead, the whole drama is like a collection of short stories of the different characters that are somehow linked to the protagonists. This is evident after 15 episodes or so. Each of the minor character has their own motivations and issues and all these are then gelled together to form a whole.
Therefore, there is something different about this drama that deviates from the norm. Certain scenes will move you as some of the characters do make an impact even though they may just be supporting roles. If you are tired of toxic palace politics and harem in Chinese historical dramas, Love Like The Galaxy will be a good one to catch to get away from that.
Strong-Willed Main Characters
I think weak female characters that often need to be saved by the hero is no longer appealing to viewers. That is why strong ones in dramas such as Jun Jiu Ling and The Autumn Ballad can resonate with fans. Similarly, Love Like The Galaxy also gives us a witty and independent young lady as its main character. Shao Shang is not perfect as she isn’t the goody-goody type who is kind and forgiving. She pays back what she receives. She is defiant and stubborn. And viewers will be able to understand what shaped her to be who she is so that the overall character is still likable despite her inadequacies.
The male protagonist is also a strong-willed individual who is cold and arrogant. In some scenes, he is even ruthless. But Ling Bu Yi is a tormented soul with a lot of hatred in his heart. His background story is also fairly well-told to the viewers so that it is easy to see things from his perspective.
Basically, the 2 main characters in the drama are flawed people with a bitter past and complex emotions. As such, they appear as more realistic although their weaknesses are glaring at times. The characters are certainly well-developed to fit into the story.
Acting And Chemistry
Overall, the cast did a good job with the roles they are given. Zhao Lu Si is ideally suited to play Shao Shang. She has that look of a defiant and witty young lady. She has played a spoilt princess before in The Romance Of Tiger And Rose before taking on a more matured one in The Long Ballad. In Love Like The Galaxy, her character is a combination of willfulness, defiance, and maturity. She did a good job to present different facets of Shao Shang to give us a complete character.
Leo Wu is also great as Ling Bu Yi. He displayed a more hardened look for the character compared to his previous role in The Long Ballad. You can sense the ruthless streak beneath the surface of Ling Bu Yi. Hence, I think Leo Wu is equally adept in his role to match Zhao Lu Si’s performance.
The 2 of them look good together as a couple with better than expected chemistry to me. In fact, Zhao Lu Si’s chemistry with Leo Wu is more evident compared to the one with Yang Yang in Who Rules The World. This is my personal opinion after having watched both dramas. The interactions between her and Leo Wu is more natural and dynamic which makes them a good pairing overall. This is despite the lack of intense kisses which are mainly reduced to innocent pecks here and there.
My Verdict – Watch!
I think Love Like The Galaxy is one of the must-watch historical dramas for 2022. It might start off a little slow at first with what seems like an endless confrontation between the female protagonist and her mother and the troubles she often get into. But the story would pick up quickly thereafter. So, you might need to give it a little time for it grow on you especially if you dislike the constant arguments.
On top of that, this is not solely a romance-focused drama. It has bits and pieces of different themes from family to revenge to palace life. It has its sweet moments but the romance is more of a slow-burn rather than a passionate and obsessive one like General And I. But as the love grows and the story unfolds, there will also be teary moments due to the well-written storyline and execution. So, you might need to reach for some tissues as you watch.
With bits and pieces of different themes and characters’ stories, it is amazing that this drama didn’t end up going all over the place. The parts are successfully put together so that they could still give us a coherent story that is logically tied back to the protagonists.
For this Love Like The Galaxy review, I would rate it 8/10. It is not without cliches and there is some predictability to it. For instance, the protagonists falling off the cliff and surviving scenario is nothing new. There is also a little exaggeration towards the end. But no drama is perfect. This one is simply good enough to give it a go as the story has a strong foundation and great plot execution for the most part.

I really enjoyed your in-depth review. It helped me to read this when I was half way through the drama as I was having trouble keeping some of the characters separated (a lot of princes, princesses, and generals), so I was glad to find this.

Looking at the many comments, so many of us gals deeply enjoy the plot and connections between the love interests. The tenderness between the leads as the couple is tremendously moving. We see the masculinity of the General and his love’s feminine side while she serves as his match in strength and compatibility. I suspect we all would love to offer and feel such profundity in love with respect. I continue to return and watch this.

Thank you very much for your hard works providing synopsis, detailed reviews and verdicts. Through your hard works, I am able to follow through many Chinese dramas till end; understanding the drama’s plots and characters more clear, make the drama easier to watch and binge on😜. Also, with your detailed reviews and verdict help me to know which dramas are worth to binge on and didn’t stop in the middle of the drama for someone who only know little of Chinese.☺️
Hope you will continually doing these hardworking good projects. 💪🏻✌🏻
It is comforting to see this drama that focuses on the family dynamics, not all on romance. I love how the romance between ML and FL is taking time, instead of both of them falling in love at first sight. We can gradually see how FL starts to develop feelings for ML because of his gesture and actions, which is more realistic.
The characterizations of each role in the drama are meticulously portrayed so that we, the audiences can visualize them alive and easily.. The characters are three-dimensional and multi-faceted. They deliver such an in-depth and rich character arc, with a myriad of emotional expressions. And the screenwriters have done an incredibly good job.👍🏻👏🏻
With its occasional comedic scenes and small twists and turns, as well as its star-studded and talented cast, their wonderful chemistry, and amazing cinematography, this drama sure can keep the audiences fully immersed into it, making one wanted to rewatch few times☺️.
