The Wolf (狼殿下) is a long-awaited Chinese drama as viewers are treated to the star power of Darren Wang, Li Qin, and Sean Xiao. I’m not too sure of the exact storyline as I start this but I understand that some people love it while others think otherwise. Hopefully, I will end up as someone who loves it as it is painful to sit through a lengthy 49-episode drama. But you can read my views later in The Wolf review as I will write one up once I have completed watching this.

His mother lived in the mountain and died during childbirth. Zhai Xing encourages Wolf Boy to integrate back into human society and brings him to the city for a visit.
General Ma Ying returns to the city with Adjutant General Xia Hou Yi who is an arrogant and petty man. Zhai Xing is sarcastic towards him when she overhears him insulting her father. But Prince Bo and Zhai Xing miss the chance to meet by mere moments.
General Ma Ying returns home and informs Zhai Xing that he is retiring. He will give up the Ma Army to ease Emperor Chu Kui’s doubts. Zhai Xing feels guilty for worrying her father over her obsession with Wolf Boy. Her maid, Xiao Feng, sets her up with Gu Qing Ping who advises her to let go of the past to avoid regret as he has the same experience of being unable to forget a woman who has died of illness.
General Ma Ying is vague to Zhai Xing about her mother’s identity but relates her to a Queen by using the analogy of a flower. Emperor Chu Kui has given orders to assassinate the Ma family and capture Zhai Xing without Prince Bo’s knowledge. Zhai Xing falls unconscious from the ordeal. General Ma Yi Han of Ma Army returns to the city. Clues have been planted to trick him that the assassination is done by the Jin state.

Prince Bo kills him but is injured in the process. Zhai Xing recognizes his howls and wakes up from her trance. But Prince Bo denies he is Wolf Boy. Zhai Xing also couldn’t find the scars on his body that will give him away which forces her to accept that Prince Bo is not Wolf Boy.

She also believes Prince Bo has saved her. Emperor Chu Kui also swears that he has nothing to do with General Ma Ying’s death. Hence, Zhai Xing decides to pledge allegiance to Emperor Chu Kui. She needs to protect the Ma Army as things are still unpredictable in their relationship with the Emperor.
Zhai Xing visits Prince Bo to thank him for saving her life. She helps him to tend to his wounds but he thinks she is merely acting. Emperor Chu Kui pressures Zhai Xing to marry Prince Bo during a welcome banquet with the excuse that it will stop Jin state from driving a wedge between them. Zhai Xing is unhappy and gets drunk as she is still thinking of Wolf Boy. She now has to let go and feels bad for abandoning him. As she is drunk, she thinks Prince Bo is Wolf Boy. She scolds him to chase him away like what she had done years ago to protect him. Prince Bo is repulsed by her arrogance and past betrayal and walks away.

Episode 7
Yang Hou wants to investigate Prince Chu You Gui’s bloodline. The prince’s mother was rumored to have a relationship with a Bozhou Army cook before marrying Emperor Chu Kui and the prince was delivered pre-maturely. The Bozhou Army members are now slaves in the capital including Lin Guang who once blurted that his son is the 2nd Prince during a drunken bout. He escapes on the way to a labor camp. Prime Minister Jing Xiang orders everyone in the know to be killed and to quickly locate Lin Guang.
Prince Bo orders his assistants to treat Zhai Xing with respect when she moves into Bo Manor so as not to arouse her suspicion. Zhai Xing is uneasy that she may have treated Prince Bo rudely while she was drunk. Feng Cheng asks Ma Jing to remain with Zhai Xing to take care of her. He knows Zhai Xing agrees to the marriage to erase Emperor Chu Kui’s doubts on their loyalty.
While on the way to Bo Manor, Zhai Xing saves a weak Lin Guang on the streets. She brings him to Bo Manor although it is against the rules to admit strangers. Prince Bo is cold towards Zhai Xing although she apologizes for her behavior. She is unsure why he is prejudiced towards her. She pleads with him to try to get along although theirs is merely a marriage of convenience – he has to obey the decree while she wants to protect the Ma Army. But Prince Bo ignores her pleas.
Lin Guang tells Zhai Xing that he is looking for his benefactor. Prince Chu You Gui drops by Bo Manor with his pregnant wife, Jing Chu Chu. Lin Guang sees Jing Chu Chu and is overwhelmed. He tells them that the prince is his benefactor.

Lin Guang willingly signs a confession before he is killed. Yang Hou reports to Emperor Chu Kui. Prime Minister Jing Xiang and 2nd Prince insist that Lin Guang committed suicide and show the Emperor the confession that he wanted to kill the prince as revenge. The Emperor quietly orders Prince Bo to investigate.
The Emperor also penalizes Zhai Xing to kneel at the ancestral temple for her mistake. She cannot be killed as she is the chess piece needed to control the Ma Army. Ma Jing anxiously reveals to Prince Bo that Zhai Xing cannot kneel for long due to a past leg injury when she tried to save Wolf Boy. Prince Bo finally learns the whole truth. He defies the Emperor’s orders and brings Zhai Xing home.
Prince Bo’s assistants find that Prime Minister Jing Xiang is trying to cover up Lin Guang’s death and 2nd Prince was a pre-mature baby. Prince Bo explains to the Emperor about Zhai Xing’s old injury and it was urgent to save her to keep the Ma Army in check. He also reports about the suspicion on the 2nd Prince’s paternity.
The Emperor is angry at Prime Minister Jing Xiang and 2nd Prince for their action over a rumor because the prince’s mother had been honest with him about her friendship with Lin Guang in the past. He temporarily strips them of their duties and delegates the work to Yang Hou and Prince Bo.
Zhai Xing awakens. Wen Yan asks her opinion about Lin Guang.
Episode 9
Zhai Xing believes Lin Guang was not an assassin and he was sacrificing himself to protect someone. She also understands that there are certain things she should not get involved in as advised by Prince Bo. Wen Yan is impressed that she shares the same thinking as Prince Bo and informs her that the prince has invited her to his forbidden courtyard that night.
Prince Bo listens to Zhai Xing’s story of her relationship with Wolf Boy and how she tried to protect him. She begins to see him as Wolf Boy as she drinks and reveals her innermost feelings of regret and yearning which have caused her a lot of bitterness. Prince Bo still hides his identity from her but comforts and kisses her forehead. When she wakes up the next morning, she is sitting in his arms while he pretends to be asleep. He gives her a bow as a gift and teaches her archery. Prince Bo also gets the imperial doctor to treat Zhai Xing’s legs.
There is an uneasy relationship between 2nd Prince and Prince Bo now because of the Lin Guang incident. Emperor Chu Kui wants 2nd Prince to help Prince Bo to entertain Princess Bao Na of Khitan who is coming for a visit. She has requested for her paintings to be hung up at Bo Manor for her visit and to be given special treatment as if she is Prince Bo’s future consort. Zhai Xing uses her wile to convince him to hide their betrothal so that they could borrow Khitan’s troops.
Princess Bao Na arrives early in order to celebrate the double 7th festival with Prince Bo. Zhai Xing pretends to be Prince Bo’s guest and serves the princess to keep her happy. Princess Bao Na awakens to find Prince Bo has left the study. She walks around and notices the sachet in Zhai Xing’s room. She grabs it and complains to 2nd Prince and Jing Xiang. 2nd Prince advises her to test out Prince Bo’s affections towards her and Zhai Xing. He now knows Zhai Xing is Prince Bo’s weakness.

He asks the other thugs to take Princess Bao Na away while he stays to handle their enemies. Ji Chong hides and listens to Zhai Xing’s conversations with her group. Zhai Xing suspects the 2nd Prince’s involvement as Princess Bao Na’s horse has been poisoned and he is the only one who knows the princess’ movements.
Ji Chong now knows why he has been hired. He reveals himself and claims he has quarreled with the other kidnappers and quit the group. He points them the princess’ location. During the rescue, Zhai Xing blocks Princess Bao Na from getting stabbed. Ji Chong shoots down the thug to save Zhai Xing.

Other Historical Dramas About Sacrifice
The Wolf is certainly one drama that is heavy on the sacrifice theme whereby the 2 lovers are prepared to die for one another. This reminds me of Love And Redemption. Although this one is a xianxia drama, the male lead has been sacrificing himself for the female lead over 9 lifetimes. The couple also has a lot of misunderstandings between them which is similar to The Wolf.
The other drama that could be worth your time is Legend Of Fei. This one is a wuxia drama whereby the male and female leads will quietly risk their lives to protect the other. The sacrifice flavor is not that heavy and those who prefer little misunderstanding in their romance dramas will probably like the Legend Of Fei better than The Wolf.
