The Starry Love (星落凝成糖) has exceeded expectations in terms of viewership and popularity that it now has many fans globally. It indeed has a good plot to work with although I have not exactly gone crazy over it. Anyway, I think it would be interesting to have a discussion on The Starry Love drama characters especially the male protagonist, You Qin.
In the story, You Qin’s soul is split into 3 shards at one point. Hence, together with his original self and the one that comes after his resurrection, there are 5 of him in the drama. All of them have different personalities which makes the plot unique.
You Qin And His Soul Shards
You Qin As Empyrean Xuan Shang
When the drama begins, You Qin is an unfeeling immortal who has buried all his desires and emotions in order to concentrate on his cultivation. He has a duty to keep the 4 realms safe and the most important task of all is to ensure that the forces of chaos remain sealed up. You Qin is expected to sacrifice himself to reseal the evil forces when the time comes and he is prepared to do so.
Thus, he is a very serious, cold, and rational immortal at the beginning. There is nothing much that could affect his emotions until the arrival of Ye Tan. That is when his world turns upside down with her unrefined behavior which runs contrary to the prim and proper decorum of the Heavenly Realm.
La Mu
La Mu is one of You Qin’s soul shards after his death. He possess the ability to absorb and releases fire. La Mu is deemed a Fire Demon by the villagers who blame him for the death of a boy. But deep down, La Mu is just like You Qin. He doesn’t know how to express himself but he cares deeply for the safety of the villagers. He is also prepared to sacrifice himself to keep them safe.
Despite his fearsome appearance, La Mu can be very gentle and loving. He shows his gentle and cute side when he falls for Ye Tan.
Mei You Qing
Mei You Qing is the second shard of You Qin’s soul. He is feared as a ruthless assassin but his martial arts prowess is fake. His only interest is to make money to the point of obsession and the pretense works well in earning him vast amount of wealth. Mei You Qing is also stingy and will never let go of any opportunity that can make him richer.
This behavior stems from his experience with Ye Tan while in the Heavenly Realm when she won all the deities’ assets in a game of mahjong and the deities then claimed everything back from You Qin. You Qin then have to think of ways to make Ye Tan pay for her behavior.
Wen Ren
Wen Ren is an accomplished playboy who has no qualms lying to different women to gain their affections. Just like Mei You Qing, this third shard of You Qin’s soul has this suppressed desire for Ye Tan while in the Heavenly Realm which now manifests itself through Wen Ren.
In fact, Wen Ren is a very polished gentleman who paints and runs a gallery. He is charming and could easily win over women until he is exposed by Ye Tan.
You Qin After Resurrection
After his resurrection, the new You Qin has a completely different personality from the one he started with. He is now a very warm and loving boyfriend who is completely into Ye Tan. His adoration for her is clearly reflected in his eyes and behavior.
This new version of You Qin is like an ideal boyfriend that all women would love to have. He is protective of her and will risk his life and family ties to ensure she is safe. But apart from playing hero, he is also very lovey-dovey when he is with her.
Which One Is Your Favorite?
Given the 5 different You Qins in The Starry Love, which one do you like the most? Personally, I like watching the original You Qin when the drama begins. He is at his most rational then and has that aura of an immortal savior. While he seems unmoved by Ye Tan, it is not exactly true as he himself admits in the later part of the drama. I just find it more interesting to watch him being gradually affected by Ye Tan emotionally when he is supposed to be all serious and unfeeling.
Apart from You Qin and Ye Tan, The Starry Love drama characters also include Qing Kui and Chao Feng. In fact, I think I prefer this second pair’s story than the main one. Qing Kui is kind and benevolent while Chao Feng is ruthless and deceiving given his background. It is nice to watch how Chao Feng’s heart melts for Qing Kui when he notices her sincere nature. Their story is also more “normal” rather than being complicated by soul splits which afflicts the first couple.
