Recently, I decided to watch The Night Of The Comet 2 (慧星来的那一夜 II) on a whim after completing a few costume dramas in a row. I didn’t watch Season 1 of this series and hence, I have no idea which is a better drama. But you can certainly watch Season 2 on its own because I didn’t find any obvious relation to the prequel. It is pretty clear that the story stands alone and you can just treat it as another new drama. The Night Of The Comet 2 review below will set out my thoughts and why this romcom isn’t really my cup of tea. But to be fair, I can also totally understand why others might love it.
My rating: 7/10

Synopsis
Xiao Xin meets Sen He when she attends an interview for the tourism anchor position. The job is to promote Sanming Island through live streaming and v-logging. She lied about her ability to dive and is offered the job. The main attraction of Sanming Island that Sen He wants to promote is scuba diving at Blue Cave. Coincidentally, Xiao Xin is allocated to be the anchor for the diving activity. She has to live stream her dive at Blue Cave and she will be joined by the CEO himself which is Sen He.
On the scheduled day, Sen He gets mad when he finds out that Xiao Xin has lied. But they go ahead to do the dive. A vortex suddenly appears while they are underwater. Sen He pushes Xiao Xin away from the swirls but gets swept away himself. He finds he is back to the interview day but Xiao Xin no longer remembers him.
This time, Sen He decides Xiao Xin should be kicked out of the interview. So, they start off with immense dislike for each other but their lives continue to be intertwined in a pre-destined way no matter which universe they are on.
The Night Of The Comet 2 Ending (Spoilers Alert!)
You can breathe a sigh of relief as The Night Of The Comet 2 has a happy ending. I think this is in contrast to Season 1 which got many fans feeling miserable. For the Season 2, the main couple ends up together. They are engaged to be married and the last episode sees them having an engagement ceremony. Xiao Xin can recall her time with Sen He in another time and space when certain scenes only seem to have a sense of familiarity to her in the past.
In the last scenes, Xiao Xin and Sen He are laying flowers to honor her parents who were from Sanming Island. Qing Ze is leaving Lam Group after recovering from his injuries. But his close relationship with Sen He remains unchanged. Then, Xiao Xin and Sen He are seen on the beach for some sweet talk to end the drama on a happy note. The Night Of The Comet 2 episode summary will have the full drama recap from Episode 1 to 20.
Is Sen He In A Parallel Universe?
Yes, he time travelled to another time and space which brings him back to the day when he first meets Xiao Xin. Their lives are somehow intertwined because of what happened to their parents.
The time travel is made possible because of the presence of the dimension door at Blue Cave. The door only opens once in a thousand years when a particular comet phenomenon occurs. Sen He happens to be diving with Xiao Xin at that time. Thus, he is sucked in through the door and ends up in an alternate universe that allows him to re-live his life from 2 months before.
Who Is The Bad Guy?
The real mastermind behind all the attempts on Xiao Xin’s and Sen He’s life is Mr. You. Mr. You has been working for the Lin family for decades. Sen He’s father, Lin Heng, had wanted to develop Sanming Island into a famous tourist resort. When Mr. You handled the construction, he harassed the islanders and evicted them from their homes.
Xiao Xin’s parents were from the island and his father was the islander’s representative. His thugs killed Xiao Xin’s mother and then burnt his father to death. Before his death, Xiao Xin’s father had reported the matter to Lin Heng who was unaware what Mr. You had been up to on the island. Lin Heng wanted to pass the matter to the authorities. Mr. You got angry that as he felt that he had been made the sacrificial lamb.
When Lin Heng and his wife went to the island to investigate, they died in a supposed shipwreck. In actual fact, they were killed on Mr. You’s orders. His henchman is Huang Wei De who used to work for Lam Group and one of the crew listed as dead in the shipwreck. In the end, Mr. You and Wei De are arrested by the police when they attack the engagement party and take Sen He hostage. Qing Ze decides to take Xiao XIn’s place to be the second hostage to stop his father and saves Sen He in the process.
The Night Of The Comet 2 Review – Funny And Light
The Night Of The Comet 2 actually reminds me a little of Put Your Head On My Shoulder because of the height difference between the male and female lead. Hence, if you like such cute couples whereby the girl is short and petite while the male is tall and good-looking, then you might enjoy this immensely. The drama is really light and funny which is why it is very easy to sit through it quickly. With only 20 episodes in total which is considered short for a C-drama, The Night Of The Comet 2 does have the ingredients for a short and sweet rom-com.
No Annoying Sub-Plots And Side Characters
It is hard for a simple rom-com to run away from cliches. So, yes, you will get the usual accidental kisses and domineering boss situations. However, cliches aside, this drama will also score highly for those who love simplicity. There are no annoying sub-plots with their supporting characters to take time away from the main couple. In other words, there is no side couple in this rom-com which is kind of rare. Even the 16-episode Well Intended Love Season 2 has a secondary couple.
On top of that, The Night Of The Comet 2 doesn’t have the usual disapproving parent and jealous ex to make trouble for the couple. Sen He and Xiao Xin’s relationship develop naturally through daily interactions. The move towards becoming a couple is a slow process for them as they try not to acknowledge their growing feelings for each other at first. With nobody trying to break them up and test their love for each other kind of plot, the romance is a straightforward one that is easy to digest and angst-free.
If there is anything to complain about when it comes to the storyline is perhaps the feeling of deja vu as the time travel happens more than once for the guy. So, you do get the feeling of “Oh, no! Not again!” when it happens and that is something that you have to be prepared for.
The Couple’s Chemistry
There is a moderate amount of kisses in the rom-com. At least, you won’t be left with the feeling that there aren’t enough of them like the couple in Girlfriend. However, neither should you expect them to be hot and passionate like those you would find in Well Dominated Love or even You Are My Destiny. Think of it as somewhere in-between an innocent first love and a more mature romance. After all, there is a 10-year age gap between Sen He and Xiao Xin who is suppose to be inexperienced when it comes to love. Hence, it makes sense to tone down the kisses to give them a lighter and more tender feeling rather than steamy which also matches the overall feel of the drama.
The chemistry between Lu Zhao Hua and Zhang Yu Jian is good but I wouldn’t say it is off-the-charts either. They can’t match the really good pairings that can leave your screen sizzling such as Dilraba Dilmurat and Johnny Huang in Love Designer. Perhaps the characters that they have to play are quirky and Sen He is also an eccentric guy which makes the couple just cute to watch but nothing more than that to me. Personally, I would prefer Zhang Yu Jian’s partnership with Janice Wu in Le Coup de Foudre than with Lu Zhao Hua in this rom-com. Coincidentally, Zhang Yu Jian is also in an older guy and younger woman relationship in Find Yourself.
My Verdict – Go For It If You Have Nothing To Watch
Mr recommendation is to give it a go if you have nothing better to watch while waiting for something else that is more interesting. You won’t feel that you have wasted your time on this one because it is funny even if you don’t like the characters for whatever reason. Both the leads have the ability to give you naturally comical expressions. And once you add in the sound and visual effects, some scenes can really tickle your funny bone.
Therefore, I think it is fair to give a rating of 7/10 for this The Night Of The Comet 2 review. Everything about it is pretty decent from the story to the cast. Having said that, I also have to mention that this rom-com isn’t exactly up to my taste either. I see it as a domineering and aloof older guy falling for an innocent and spirited young girl. It is a case of opposites attract but I don’t get the vibe of a matching couple here. They are cute together but that cuteness fades pretty fast for me once I got used to seeing their interactions.
Take away the time travel aspect and this drama is just another dominant boss and personal assistant rom-com at its core. One warning is their relationship only starts to get a little more serious around Episode 13. So, it takes a while to sit through. Depending on what floats your boat, the couple can be sweet with their unique characteristics or annoying with their respective eccentricities. While the romance itself isn’t anything extraordinary, I would say watch it for the laughs and cute moments as it is essentially a stress-free drama.
