I was quite surprised that The Double (墨雨云间) has managed to receive such great reviews from viewers. It would have escaped my attention if not for the high ratings from certain sites. After all, Wu Jin Yan hasn’t had any memorable dramas in the last 2 to 3 years as far as I can remember. And I would have been hesitant to start this given the 40-episode length if it has been rated lower. But I’m happy that I gave this my due attention, thanks to the largely positive reviews. I have my own take on this C drama with my own review of The Double below.
My rating: 8/10

Synopsis
Xue Fang Fei thought she has married a good husband but she ended up being framed for adultery by her in-laws. Her husband then tried to kill her and bury her alive in a remote mountain. He lamented that he had no choice but to follow orders and kill her. Her father and brother were also murdered. Xue Fang Fei managed to survive and met Jiang Li who was a resident in a nearby nunnery. Jiang Li is the Prime Minister’s daughter but has been sent to the nunnery as punishment 10 years ago. She was wrongly accused of causing her stepmother to fall and miscarry.
Jiang Li was subsequently killed in the nunnery when she was harshly punished for trying to sneak out to see Xue Fang Fei. Before she died, she told Xue Fang Fei her wish to seek justice for what was done to her. Xue Fang Fei then took on Jiang Li’s identity and schemed her way to return to the Jiang family to fulfill Jiang Li’s wish as well as her own desire for revenge against her husband and his backer.
Along the way, Xue Fang Fei gets entangled with Duke Su who is investigating a case of salt smuggling. Duke Su sees her as a good pawn in his quest to uncover the powerful people behind the smuggling activities while she needs his help to achieve her own revenge goal. The lines become blurred when they start getting attracted to each other. The situation also becomes increasingly dangerous when their investigation gets closer to the people involved and Xue Fang Fei’s identity as Jiang Li is raising suspicions.
The Double Ending & Recap (Spoilers Alert!)
The Double has a happy ending. Duke Su with the help of Situ Jiu Yue put down Lord Cheng’s rebellion. He kills Lord Cheng to avenge his father’s death. Shen Yu Rong who has allied himself with Lord Cheng commits suicide after his defeat by jumping from the city wall. His mother and sister are detained for questioning and the family’s assets are confiscated.
Consort Li refuses to be made a hostage by Lord Cheng during the rebellion. She slashes her neck against the hostage taker’s sword and dies to enable Duke Su to go in for the kill. Li Zhong Nan and his son are arrested and sentenced to death for treason. Xue Fang Fei/Jiang Li’s 3rd uncle and his wife are expelled from the family. They enabled Princess Wan Ning to kidnap Xue Fang Fei/Jiang Li as part of the rebellion plot.
Xue Fang Fei has an illusion of Jiang Li thanking her for clearing her (Jiang Li’s) name when she visits her grave after the rebellion. When Xue Fang Fei wants to tell Prime Minister Jiang about her identity, he indicates that he already knew. His heart aches for his departed daughter but he also asks Xue Fang Fei to keep her identity a secret between them to shield Old Madam Jiang from the truth. He also decides to resign from his position and moves the family to Yongzhou to join Ruo Yao.
With Lord Cheng’s death, Dai Country opportunistically starts a war at the border. Duke Su marries Xue Fang Fei before leaving for the war. He promises that he will return when flowers bloom on the tree they planted together. Wen Ji and Lu Ji die in the war. Months passed and Duke Su returns to Xue Fang Fei on the day as promised.
Extra Episode
The extra episode is just a 5-minute snippets of Duke Su and Xue Fang Fei’s married life. They have been married 8 years with a young daughter in the extra episode.
Xue Fang Fei/Jiang Li’s Identity
Duke Su knows Xue Fang Fei/Jiang Li’s real identity all along because he had seen her before when she was married to Shen Yu Rong. She admits to him that she is not Jiang Li in Episode 18 after they have gotten closer and he has helped her to take down a governor who is eyeing the Ye family’s assets on Li Zhong Nan’s instructions.
Princess Wan Ning tries to expose Xue Fang Fei/Jiang Li’s identity in Episode 23 and 24 when the latter is clearing her father’s name in court. But the plot fails because Prime Minister Jiang and Shen Yu Rong insist that Xue Fang Fei/Jiang Li is who she claims to be. Shen Yu Rong fears his mother and sister would be implicated if the truth is revealed as they had a hand in trying to have Xue Fang Fei killed. The witnesses at the nunnery are also contradicting each other as a result of Duke Su’s prior arrangement. Hence, Xue Fang Fei’s identity as Jiang Li remains safe.
In Episode 32, Xue Fang Fei takes the risk not to pretend to be Jiang Li in front of Shen Yu Rong anymore. She knows that he knows her identity all along. He has not exposed her because he still has a conscience. Thus, Xue Fang Fei pushes him to confess his crimes but he refuses with the excuse that he needs to protect his mother and sister. Shen Yu Rong then tries to hug Xue Fang Fei but is knocked unconscious by Ye Shi Jie who has followed them. Ye Shi Jie now knows she is not the real Jiang Li but doesn’t mind her deception as he could feel her sincerity.
Shen Yu Rong’s Plan
Shen Yu Rong is arrested in Episode 32 after he tried to force himself on Xue Fang Fei/Jiang Li. Princess Wan Ning tells Xue Fang Fei/Jiang Li that she really likes Shen Yu Rong and wants her to retract her accusation against him in Episode 33. In return, she will free Xue Zhao whom she has captured. Xue Fang Fei/Jiang Li’s willingness to do so confirms her identity that she is Xue Zhao’s sister which Princess Wan Ning knew all along because she has seen Xue Fang Fei when she was Shen Yu Rong’s wife.
Hence, Xue Fang Fei/Jiang Li is forced to say that she admired Shen Yu Rong but maliciously accused him because he rejected her. Shen Yu Rong is freed and convinces Princess Wan Ning to ask the Emperor to grant him and Xue Fang Fei/Jiang Li marriage. His reason is that it is better for Xue Fang Fei/Jiang Li to be under their control than Duke Su’s. Xue Fang Fei/Jiang Li will also be beneath Princess Wan Ning when the latter marries him in the near future.
Shen Yu Rong then tells Xue Fang Fei/Jiang Li that he is marrying her to protect her. But she feels nothing but disgust for him. After Duke Su’s plotting caused the marriage idea to fall through, Shen Yu Rong hates him even more. Shen Yu Rong then manipulates Princess Wan Ning into marrying Li Jin in Episode 35 by claiming that it is for the safety of their unborn baby. In actual fact, he only wants to get back with Xue Fang Fei. He even counsels Lord Cheng to kill Princess Wan Ning and frames the Emperor for it in Episode 38 to justify a rebellion.
Princess Wan Ning’s Ending
Princess Wan Ning dies in Episode 39. Shen Yu Rong has never wanted to marry her but to re-marry Xue Fang Fei. He is supposed to poison her to fake her death as agreed with Lord Cheng in Episode 38 so that they have an excuse to overthrow the Emperor. After poisoning Princess Wan Ning, he proceeds to free Xue Fang Fei who has been kidnapped by her. A weakened Princess Wan Ning blocks his way. She pulls his hand which is holding the hairpin he gave her to stab herself in the stomach and dies.
In Episode 38, Princess Wan Ning’s own flashback reveals that she had killed her sickly father by suffocating him with a pillow after her return from Dai Country. She became bitter after her father sent her to be a hostage princess to Dai Country whereby she was abused and raped. When she fell pregnant, she purposely harmed herself to lose the baby. Thus, she was diagnosed as barren after her return to Great Yan. Her experience left her revengeful and the feeling that others don’t deserve happiness if she can’t have the same.
When Did The Leads Get Together?
Xue Fang Fei/Jiang Li knows that Duke Su is using her as a chess piece all along. She tells him that she is willing to give her life for him to continue doing that as she also needs his help to save her father and get her revenge in Episode 19. She reminds him that they may have different paths but their destination is the same as he is also after Li Zhong Nan and Princess Wan Ning.
As their feelings developed along the way, Duke Su has to admit to the Emperor that he has fallen for Xue Fang Fei/Jiang Li as he is not prepared to use her as a sacrificial pawn any longer in Episode 32. Duke Su’s feelings for her is clear when he tightly holds her hand after her release from prison in Episode 33 after she was briefly detained for retracting her report against Shen Yu Rong for defiling her. He confesses that he loves her in Episode 34.
Why Is The Xue Family Targeted?
Duke Su’s investigation reveals that an illegal gold mine has been set up in Huaixiang in Episode 18. This is why Magistrate Xue is framed for corruption and taken out by the villains. They also wanted to kill his children because they are afraid that Magistrate Xue has told them about the illegal gold mine. Hence, they needed to be silenced and not solely because Xue Fang Fei had offended Princess Wan Ning. Xue Fang Fei/Jiang Li also realizes the same in Episode 19 after finding out about the gold mine.
When Xue Fang Fei/Jiang Li gets information that her father is still alive and awaiting execution in prison, she manages to get him out and clears his name in Episode 23 with Duke Su’s help. But Magistrate Xue has become delusional due to his imprisonment and thinking that both his children have died.
What Happened To Ruo Yao?
Ruo Yao and Yu E try to set up Xue Fang Fei/Jiang Li to tarnish her reputation during a banquet as per Ji Shu Ran and Concubine Li’s arrangement in Episode 13. But Yu E ends up taking advantage of the situation by sleeping with an unsuspecting Zhou Yan Bang who thought she is Xue Fang Fei/Jiang Li in the dark. This results in Ruo Yao’s engagement with Zhou Yan Bang being cancelled while he is forced to marry Yu E after their deed is exposed.
After the marriage, Zhou Yan Bang treats Yu E badly as he hates her for what she has done. So, Yu E tells him that it was Xue Fang Fei/Jiang Li who set them up in Episode 25. Zhou Yan Bang is incensed with Xue Fang Fei/Jiang Li as a result. He tricks Ruo Yao to help him kidnap Xue Fang Fei/Jiang Li. Ruo Yao knocks his head with a brick after Xue Fang Fei/Jiang Li exposed his duplicity in Episode 26. Zhou Yan Bang turns into a vegetative state after the incident. Yu E chooses to remain with him with his fate now being in her hands given his condition.
Ruo Yao becomes more aware of her mother’s manipulation after her experience with Zhou Yan Bang and Xue Fang Fei/Jiang Li’s direct conversation. She quarrels with her mother in Episode 27 after she turned down a marriage proposal her mother arranged for her. Ruo Yao then becomes her mother’s pawn when the latter wants to get rid of Xue Fang Fei/Jiang Li. She is poisoned to give the impression that she is possessed by evil spirits residing in Xue Fang Fei/Jiang Li’s body. When she recovers, she is stumped by her mother’s viciousness. She subsequently leaves home for Yongzhou.
Ji Shu Ran’s Evil Deeds
In Episode 25, Princess Wan Ning suggests that Ji Shu Ran gets the Imperial Diviner’s help to get rid of Xue Fang Fei/Jiang Li by claiming that she is possessed by evil spirits. But the Imperial Diviner turns out to be Ji Shu Ran’s ex, Liu Wen Cai. Her father was against their relationship and forced them apart. He also beat Liu Wen Cai up and broke his hand. When Liu Wen Cai returned to look for her later on, she has already married Prime Minister Jiang. After spending the night with him, Ji Shu Ran tried to kill him by burning down his house. But he survived.
In Episode 26, Xue Fang Fei/Jiang Li meets Aunt Hu who has to pretend to be crazy after the death of her daughter, Jiang Yue, who was killed by Ji Shu Ran. Aunt Hu was Prime Minister Jiang’s concubine. Jiang Yue’s body was then dumped into the pond to give the impression that she fell into the water and drowned.
To convince Liu Wen Cai to help her, Ji Shu Ran tells him that it was Xue Fang Fei/Jiang Li that made her fall and miscarry their child in Episode 27. To make her story believable, she even poisons her own daughter to convince everyone that there is an evil spirit lurking in their residence and Liu Wen Cai’s help is needed. Xue Fang Fei/Jiang Li counterplots and exposes Ji Shu Ran’s killing of Jiang Yue instead during the exorcism in Episode 28. A commotion ensues and Tong Er dies after shielding Xue Fang Fei/Jiang Li from Liu Wen Cai’s attack. Liu Wen Cai is also killed during the fight.
Her Fate
All of Ji Shu Ran’s crimes are exposed following the incident. Aunt Hu commits suicide after getting justice for her daughter. She left behind a blood note that Ji Shu Ran also killed Jiang Li’s mother in order to marry Prime Minister Jiang. Concubine Li convinces their father to take responsibility and repent in a temple so that Ji Shu Ran’s life can be spared. Although Ji Shu Ran didn’t have to die for her evil deeds, she has become crazy. Xue Fang Fei/Jiang Li wants her locked up in the Jiang family ancestral tomb as punishment just like what she did to Aunt Hu in Episode 29.
Prime Minister Jiang regrets distrusting his own daughter and abandoning her all these years. But Xue Fang Fei/Jiang Li tells him that it is hard to forgive and forget because the scars remain. He then decides to take leave from the court and take a break with Ruo Yao. He also knows it is better for him to stay away from Xue Fang Fei/Jiang Li and not to meddle into her affairs from then on.
What Happened To Duke Su’s Father?
The full story of Duke Su’s father, General Xiao, is revealed in Episode 37. General Xiao once stopped Lord Cheng from claiming the throne after the death of the previous Emperor who had decreed that the current Emperor should take over. So, he had an axe to grind with General Xiao. During a battle with an enemy state at Wang City, Lord Cheng abandoned the city and its people when reinforcements didn’t seem to be arriving. General Xiao stayed on with another 100 of his soldiers to stop the other side from advancing so that the people had time to safely evacuate.
Once the people had evacuated, General Xiao and his soldiers could have retreated. But Lord Cheng cut off their retreat path and left them to die in the battlefield. He didn’t want General Xiao and his soldiers to return alive so that no one would know that he had fled without a care for the people.
Duke Su’s grandfather knew how his son died. He shown acceptance of Lord Cheng’s version of events that General Xiao was killed by enemies to ensure Duke Su’s safety. Lord Cheng was quietly threatening him with Duke Su’s life to warn him not to voice out. After learning what happened in the past through Xue Fang Fei’s efforts, Duke Su makes peace with his grandfather.
The Double Review – Storytelling Done Right
The story of The Double is actually nothing new. A protagonist taking on another person’s identity has been explored before in both modern and historical dramas such as Guess Who I Am and In Blossom respectively. With the high ratings, I was actually expecting a unique and refreshing plot. But it didn’t really matter once I started because the plot execution is done right. Hence, the cliche story doesn’t pull the drama down. Instead, it opens up room for the characters to flourish in their roles.
The first few minutes of the opening episode will immediately hook you into the story. It is a dramatic start and you will have nothing but pity for the female lead. The seed to root for her is already planted within that short time. There will be this desire to see her get the justice she deserves. Of course, an exciting opening doesn’t mean the drama would be a great one overall since you have 40 episodes to sit through. Whether the interest is sustainable would depend on the story progress and character development.
What makes this story being able to stretch up to 40 episodes is the need to get justice not only for the female protagonist, but also for the lady whose identity she assumed. Thus, a substantial portion of the story is about her relationship with the lady’s stepmother with all the plotting and counter-plotting.
The Stepmother Syndrome
This is another trope in The Double whereby we have an evil stepmother in the story. The female lead is the underdog in the beginning and there will be many schemings going on between her and the stepmother. All these schemings are not as elaborate and deep as Joy Of Life S1 and S2 but they occupy more than half of the story. Perhaps some viewers might find this boring as it will seem never-ending. But the viciousness and manipulation of the villain will annoy you and this will make you look forward to her downfall.
Apart from her stepmother, the female lead also has to face her own past and get revenge for what was done to her and her family. So, the schemings that involve the stepmother are interspersed with her interactions with her ex-husband who thought he killed and buried her in the beginning of the story. The ex-husband plot line spices up the story and their scenes are always heavy with hints about their past without direct confirmation on her identity. Therefore, the drama could sustain my interest with these 2 parallel plot lines.
Well-Developed Characters
One thing that I do like about The Double is the well-written characters. There are sound motivations behind their actions and personality. Even the villains are shown a past that shaped their thinking and behavior. One of the villains is such a sadist with her outrageous cruelty and bullying nature. She will make your blood boil but her character truly stands out.
The female lead’s ex-husband and revenge target is also another interesting character. He is complex and you can sense he is torn between what he should and shouldn’t do especially in the first half of the story. So, he is not a typical one-dimensional villain but one who is forced into it by circumstances and too cowardly to get out of.
As for the female lead, she is strong with an iron will. So, if you like strong and smart female characters, you can include her on your list. The male lead is the more typical handsome, smart, and aloof noble but you will enjoy watching him for his good looks and charisma as well as his interactions with the female lead.
Leads’ Chemistry
The leads’ chemistry definitely ups the ante for The Double. Despite the 11-year age gap between Wu Jin Yan and Wang Xing Yue, it is hardly noticeable in the drama. They complement each other very well and the flirting that goes on between them in the story is engaging unlike Yang Mi and Simon Gong in Fox Spirit Matchmaker: Red-Moon Pact. There are hardly any kisses in The Double but the couple doesn’t need skinship to sell their romance at all. They just look good together and their interactions can send your heart aflutter when they appear in the same scene.
I think this is the best performance that I have seen from Wu Jin Yan after having watched a few of her dramas such as Royal Feast and My Bargain Queen. She brought out Xue Fang Fei’s personality with the way she portrayed her role. There is no overacting with the revenge bit but you can sense the steely determination in her body language that matches the character’s experience.
Wang Xing Yue may be young but he has such a handsome face and is charismatic. Who could forget him in Amidst A Snowstorm Of Love and Story Of Kunning Palace? His facial features and demeanor is perfect for characters such as Duke Su who is confident, powerful and intimidating. So, his acting feels effortless in portraying the role and you will automatically drool over his face as well as body when he is shirtless!
My Verdict – Watch!
What is great about The Double is that the storytelling and characters are done right. As mentioned, there is nothing novel about a revenge plot and the protagonist assuming another person’s identity. But because the plot execution is well thought out, you don’t feel shortchanged. In addition, you will feel invested in the characters because they are written well with backstories to support their behavior. Once your emotions are evoked, you will want to see the revenge runs its course and justice for the leads which will leave you satisfied.
The Double is not particularly heavy on the romance although it is a selling point due to the leads’ chemistry. You savor their interactions because you can sense the electricity between them. A positive aspect of the plot is that the romance doesn’t take viewers’ focus away from the revenge angle. Many romance dramas will take a detour to give room for love and/or misunderstanding to develop between the leads which can be silly and immature at times. However, this drama’s focus on revenge remains strong all the way which means the plot has no chance to stray off course.
For this The Double review, I would rate it 8/10. No points for originality but plenty for storytelling and characters. The ending could be better as I think the last part is unnecessary. It could have ended where all the villains have got their just punishment. But nope, they have to include something at the end that isn’t even explored much throughout the whole drama. This might make it a little rushed for some but nevertheless, it is not that bad overall. In fact, this is one of the better ones so far this year for me.
