Hi Venus (我可能遇到了救星) appears as a typical rom-com at first glance. I wasn’t keen on this drama initially because the leads remind me of another project of theirs which was close to a disaster for me. But the high ratings made me waver. With only 24 episodes in total, it further convinced me that it is worth the risk. And now I have to say that I’m glad I gave this a go. It is easy to fall in love with this drama despite its simplicity and predictability. My Hi Venus review below will highlight some of the best aspects of this production and why you should watch.
My rating: 8/10

Synopsis
Anxing Hospital is a private hospital with a social welfare program whereby it will regularly send doctors to service remote villages. The doctors will be there for 3 months before they are recalled back to the hospital. Ye Shi Lan is a pediatrician at Anxing Hospital who has been sent to Taoyuan Village in a mountainous area for more than 6 months. She has been left at the village because she has offended her petty superior who refused to recall her back.
One night, she meets Lu Zhao Xi who is on a fishing trip to the village. Lu Zhao Xi has been stranded due to a landslide. Ye Shi Lan thinks he is a thief who tried to steal her lamb as well as a fake medicinal wine peddler out to fleece the villagers. Thus, she gives him a hard time by making him do chores at the village clinic grounds while he awaits the roads to be cleared. Ye Shi Lan also finds it ridiculous when Lu Zhao Xi claims that he is the President of Anxing Hospital.
When Ye Shi Lan is suddenly recalled back to the hospital, she is shocked that Lu Zhao Xi is indeed who he claims to be. She assumes Lu Zhao Xi will be revengeful for what she did to him at the village especially when he picks her to be his personal assistant.
Hi Venus Ending (Spoilers Alert!)
Hi Venus has a happy ending. Lu Zhao Xi proposes to Ye Shi Lan and she says yes. They consummated their relationship at the end of Episode 24. Ye Shi Lan has learned to be more positive and trusting with Lu Zhao Xi’s love and encouragement. She has become a happier and better person as a result.
Jia Jia and Assistant Lin also end up as a couple. She is going to buy over a cafe and a company is also interested to buy the copyrights to one of her novels.
When Did The Couple Get Together?
Lu Zhao Xi kisses Ye Shi Lan in Episode 15 when they got too close to each other. But they are intercepted by a call. The next day, Ye Shi Lan asks Lu Zhao Xi to treat the kiss as an accident as they have been drinking during dinner. He isn’t happy about it and asks Qiao Yu to help him make Ye Shi Lan jealous instead. But when his action angers Ye Shi Lan, he regrets hurting her. He coaxes her back by asking her to accompany him to his mother’s birthday.
Lu Zhao Xi confesses to Ye Shi Lan first before she also admits her own feelings for him. They got together as a couple in Episode 16. He already suggests that they get married in Episode 21 to protect her against rumors but she shoots down the idea as they have just started dating then.
Is There A Breakup And Love Triangle?
No, the couple didn’t break up after getting together. She only pretends to break up with him in Episode 22 on Chairman Lu’s suggestion so that they could close in on Gao Xuan who has been spreading rumors about the couple in a bid to unseat Lu Zhao Xi as the President of the hospital. She then requests to go to Taoyuan Village to convince everyone that they have broken up.
Lu Zhao Xi only finds out about his father’s plan after returning from a business trip in Episode 23. He then pretends to be angry to enjoy being coaxed by Ye Shi Lan. Lu Zhao Xi turns up at Taoyuan Village to give Ye Shi Lan a surprise after Gao Xuan is arrested. He proposes to her at the village in Episode 24.
There is also no love triangle and jealous exes. Although Qiao Yu is Lu Zhao Xi’s ex-girlfriend, they are only good friends. She turns up solely because of work and even helps him to make Ye Shi Lan jealous in Episode 15.
What Happened To Ye Shi Lan’s Father?
Ye Shi Lan’s mother reveals that her husband committed suicide in a conversation with Lu Zhao Xi when she comes to visit her daughter in Episode 10. That is why Ye Shi Lan has always been resentful of her father because she felt that he had abandoned them. His death hurt her a lot as she was close to him and was a good father.
In Episode 24, Ye Shi Lan learns from Lu Zhao Xi that Gao Xuan has been investigating her to collect information for his rumors. After Gao Xuan has been arrested, a file on Ye Shi Lan is found in his room. Gao Xuan’s investigation reveals that Ye Shi Lan’s father was diagnosed with a severe disease just before he committed suicide. Hence, he didn’t abandon the family because his business lost money as initially thought. He chose to end his life because he didn’t want to burden the family with his illness. He was giving them a way out when they had no more savings.
Side Couple
Assistant Lin is a regular customer at Jia Jia’s cafe. Jia Jia has been observing him and uses his behavior as materials for her web novels. Assistant Lin finds out about it and forces Jia Jia to change her storyline in Episode 10. He is not satisfied that he has been depicted as a villain. Jia Jia has named the villain Kevin which also happens to be Assistant Lin’s English name. He claims that his crush has read Jia Jia’s novel and told him about it. Jia Jia dislikes him at first but they become friends when Assistant Lin apologizes and offers to help her with business information that she needs for her writings in Episode 14.
Ye Shi Lan discovers that the Kevin that Jia Jia mentions is Assistant Lin through social media in Episode 17 and tells her about it. Jia Jia teases Assistant Lin with the fact in Episode 18. They become closer and he offers to be her agent to help her promote her novels to filming companies in Episode 19. She confesses her feelings to him in Episode 24 which he reciprocates.
Hi Venus Review – Feel Good Romance
Hi Venus is essentially a feel good office romance drama with no angst and complications. It is a very relaxing and most importantly, a sweet watch. It has a cliche feel of a rich man and poor girl romance. The story is predictable and very simple. But the cliche does not take away the enjoyment of the drama because certain aspects of the production has been done really well such as the dialogues and plot execution. It is a very positive romance that will make female viewers crave for more.
While the story has a hospital setting, the female lead’s medical work is not explored at all which is a little different from You Are My Hero and Light Chaser Rescue. Instead, romance is the sole focus of the drama. With the simple storyline, the screenwriter stayed on topic and made use of the screen time to develop the couple’s relationship rather than trying to be overdramatic. He is the same screenwriter that gave us Meet Yourself, The Day Of Becoming You and Go Ahead.
A Clean Plot
Hi Venus is a stress-free drama that does away with disapproving parents, jealous exes, and silly misunderstandings. While the guys’ family is rich, his parents are not snobs who put on airs. So, there is no drama of the guy being forced to date someone of the same status. There is also no toxic third party to derail the couple’s relationship which is a common plot in rom-coms from First Love 2022 to My Girlfriend Is An Alien S2.
Similarly, the protagonists are responsible and sensible individuals who communicate with each other. Hence, misunderstandings are nipped in the bud before they become an issue. Overall, it is a breath of fresh air to be able to enjoy a romance without all these common negativities. That is why it feels good to watch this drama. With none of the toxicities, it is uplifting to see the female lead achieving personal growth from the positive relationship with her boyfriend and all the fluff that comes with it.
Great Dialogues
I think one of the main reasons why Hi Venus is entertaining is the witty dialogues. Just like You Are My Glory, the couple’s banter and conversations will keep you hooked. They are teasing, warm, romantic, flirty, and deep at different moments. If you just watch the scenes without paying attention to the dialogues, this could be a pretty average drama with the romantic plot trope.
Therefore, the dialogues have been given due attention and thought throughout the 24 episodes. They have been written in a way to keep the chemistry and romance flowing. So, even if the story is predictable, you don’t have the urge to skip or fast forward because the couple’s conversations is one of the highlights.
Oozing Chemistry
This is not the first time that Joseph Zeng and Liang Jie have cooperated in a project. They were co-stars in Time Flies And You Are Here. Perhaps that is why they seem to have better chemistry this time around since they are already familiar with each other. In Hi Venus, this onscreen couple looks perfectly matched whether in the looks department or personality. Their interactions as lovers are natural and pleasing to watch. You can just sense the love between them through the screen, thanks to their sizzling chemistry.
In terms of acting, I also can’t picture anyone else playing these 2 main characters. Perhaps the familiarity with each other already set into motion the ease to get into their roles as lovers. You will be dazzled by Joseph Zeng’s big, expressive eyes and boyish face that emit charm for such a sweet romance drama. Liang Jie is also pretty and plays the part of Ye Shi Lan well to give the character a toughness with a soft touch.
My Verdict – Sweet!
Basically, Hi Venus is a type of cotton candy romance drama that you watch to feel good and sweet all over. It is well-executed in the sense that you can feel the romance and crave for more. It is also satisfying to see the female protagonist’s character growth from someone with a pessimistic view and low self-esteem to a bubblier and more positive personality which is made possible by a fulfilling relationship.
No doubt the drama feels like a fairy tale. The male protagonist is the perfect boyfriend. In fact, you can argue that he is too perfect that it eclipses reality. He is rich, handsome, loving, respectful, warm, supportive, and all good things put together. But the refreshing aspect is he is not your typical cold and domineering CEO that adorns a lot of rom-coms like Time To Fall In Love and Warm Meet You. Thus, it feels different but it still manages to make viewers swoon as should be the case for a romance drama.
For this Hi Venus review, I would give it a 8/10 rating. Watch it for the chemistry, dialogues, and healthy relationship. There is a fair amount of lighthearted teasings as well as kisses. It is also charming to see the guy enjoying the sweet talk, flattering, and coaxing as much as the girl. This is certainly not a drama that you watch for the plot but the process of falling in love and the couple’s relationship dynamics. Hence, the rewatch value should be pretty high for this one if you enjoy the couple’s interactions.
