Go Ahead Episode Summary

After watching a bunch of romance dramas with the latest being Dating In The Kitchen, Go Ahead (以家人之名) is a welcome change as the focus is on family relationships instead. I really don’t know what to expect for this one and I’m also hoping that this would not turn out to be a tearjerker which isn’t exactly my favorite. But with Seven Tan leading the cast, I’m ready to give this a go. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that I can complete this drama and come up with the full episode summary and Go Ahead review for readers.

Episode 1

It’s 1999.

Li Jian Jian is the only daughter of Li Hai Chao. Her mother died more than a year ago due to pregnancy complications. Hai Chao runs a noodle restaurant and is a doting father. He loves kids.

Ling He Ping is transferred to the town’s police station and becomes Hai Chao’s upstairs neighbor. His wife, Chen Ting, is always picking a fight with him and blames him for losing their daughter. Their son, Ling Xiao, has to put up with the unhappiness at home and becomes withdrawn. His mother throws away a family photo and toys that he has kept that remind him of his sister. Jian Jian picks them up and takes them home.

Jian Jian has a liking for Ling Xiao but he ignores her. Hai Chao also pities Ling Xiao and encourages him to come to his home when his parents are quarreling. But Ling Xiao declines the invitation.

Mrs. Qian tries to set up Hai Chao on a blind date with He Mei who is a divorcee with a son named He Zi Qiu. She only found out she was pregnant after the divorce and proceeded to bring up Zi Qiu on her own. But she admits to Hai Chao that she is tired as she needs to work hard apart from taking care of her son. Zi Qiu is very tolerant of Jian Jian and indulges her despite her dislike of him. Jian Jian is just not happy if her father re-marries and she ends up with a stepmother.

The 3 kids end up in a brawl when Jian Jian tries to protect Ling Xiao from being bullied and Zi Qiu joins in. Hai Chao reprimands her for influencing Zi Qiu but the latter defends her by agreeing that he did it voluntarily.

Episode 2

Neighbors visits Chen Ting and advise her about her relationship with her husband. Chen Ting kicks up a fuss when He Ping returns from work and accuses him of talking about their family affairs with neighbors. Ling Xiao is sitting on the stairways as his parents quarrel. Jian Jian invites him to her place to have dinner. After dinner, she returns him his family photo that his mother had thrown away. He is taught to forget his sister but Jian Jian shows him that he could quietly keep her in his heart. Jian Jian also misses her mother but pretends no to to ease her father’s pain.

Before long, it becomes a habit for Ling Xiao to join Jian Jian and her father for meals. One day, He Mei calls Hai Chao to borrow money. She claims her mother is sick in the countryside and leaves Zi Qiu with him. Zi Qiu readily addresses Hai Chao as father. Jian Jian hates his presence at first and bullies him. But Zi Qiu will always indulge her.

Chen Ting discovers the family photo and beats Ling Xiao. He Ping slaps her to make her stop. Their daughter died because she choked on a pecan when Ling Xiao was looking after her while Chen Ting was playing mahjong with friends. Chen Ting couldn’t get over it and finally, leaves the family. He Ping is grateful to Hai Chao for taking care of Ling Xiao while he works. Both men have their regrets but know they have to soldier on for the kids. The 3 kids end up growing up together.

It’s 2009.

Jian Jian is entering high school. Hai Chao asks Ling Xiao and Zi Qiu to look after Jian Jian at school since they are 2 grades higher.

Episode 3

Jian Jian is a brash 16-year-old with poor academic results. Zi Qiu’s aunt, He Lan, drops by to visit Hai Chao. She is thankful to him for bringing up Zi Qiu. There is no news on He Mei. He Ping and Hai Chao have become good friends. He eats at Hai Chao’s place with the kids everyday and they are like a big happy family.

However, Jian Jian is the youngest and the only female in the family. The males are finding it embarrassing when she starts to talk about her menses and undergarments. Hai Chao has to ask a female neighbor to help Jian Jian to buy bras.

At school, they get to know Jian Jian’s classmate, Qi Ming Yue, when they save her from 2 thugs. Ming Yue is a top student but timid. Her mother is very strict with her. She becomes good friend with Jian Jian. During a teacher-parents meeting, Ming Yue’s mother is more keen on getting her daughter to befriend those with good results. On the other hand, Hai Chao is not so particular about Jian Jian’s academic results. Jian Jian’s strength and interest is in art.

Ling Xiao’s maternal grandmother calls He Ping. She wants him to arrange for temporary schooling for Chen Ting’s daughter. Chen Ting has remarried and her husband is returning temporarily for work. Ling Xiao is unhappy whenever he hears of anything related to his mother. Hence, He Ping decides not to tell him.

Ling Xiao is uneasy that Jian Jian still crawls into his bed. He orders her to get off and she does so angrily. Zi Qiu tells him that Jian Jian is still a kid but Ling Xiao says she is already 16.

Episode 4

Ming Yue’s mother pressures her to do better than the top student and to mix with those with good grades. Ming Yue also seems to be interested in Zi Qiu.

Chen Ting returns and meets Ling Xiao. She is now married to a senior executive of a large company. She apologizes and hopes for a reconciliation but Ling Xiao is still angry with her. He also doesn’t like it when she judges his relationship with Hai Chao. Jian Jian waits for Ling Xiao to finish his meeting with his mother. Zi Qiu leaves halfway through when Jian Jian starts asking him about his mother. He says he would not look for her but privately, he still does and feels hurt over the abandonment.

Chen Ting has a meeting with He Ping who has helped her to arrange for her daughter’s schooling. He gets angry when she tells him that she has met Ling Xiao while she accuses him of leaving their son under Hai Chao’s care. Both father and son do not know how to face the problem and avoid talking about it. But He Ping mentions about the meeting to Hai Chao. Ling Xiao has a nightmare that night about his sister’s death.

Ling Xiao’s grandmother brings Chen Ting’s daughter, Qin Mei Ying, to Hai Chao’s place. It is her scheme to get Ling Xiao to accept her half-sister and re-establish relationship with Chen Ting. But Ling Xiao is cold towards Mei Ying.

Ming Yue’s mother is surprised that Jian Jian’s brothers are top students. Ming Yue also warns Jian Jian that Mei Yang could snatch Ling Xiao away from her with their blood ties. But Jian Jian is confident that it wouldn’t happen. Ling Xiao overhears the neighbors talking about his mother.

Episode 5

Both Ling Xiao and Zi Qiu discuss about their mothers. Ling Xiao has no special feelings about his mother’s re-entry into his life except to find it a disturbance.

Chen Ting keeps bringing Mei Ying to see Ling Xiao. He is less resistant now which makes Jian Jian a little jealous. Ming Yue buys Zi Qiu a watch for his birthday but is disappointed later when she notices that he has given the watch to Ling Xiao to wear.

On Zi Qiu’s birthday, He Lan drops by for the celebration. Hai Chao is unhappy to overhear He Lan telling Zi Qiu that he is a charity case of the family. Unlike Ling Xiao’s father who pays Hai Chao monthly expenses to help to look after his son, Zi Qiu is brought up solely on Hai Chao’s generosity. Hence, He Lan always feels indebted to Hai Chao and thinks Zi Qiu should not equate himself to Jian Jian in the family.

Hai Chao’s Love For The Boys

Hai Chao gets a little drunk and upset that others always look at their lack of blood ties. He loves the 2 boys and treats them like his own. He raised Zi Qiu because he was pained to see him struggling in the countryside as a kid. Hai Chao made sure Zi Qiu feels accepted. He Mei wrote him a letter to thank him and give Zi Qiu to him then. He Lan advises Zi Qiu not to look for his mother anymore so as not to make Hai Chao unhappy. But Zi Qiu wants to know why his mother left him behind.

Mei Ying asks Jian Jian to help him to look for Ling Xiao during the weekend. An accident causes Mei Ying to fall down the stairs and lands in hospital with a fracture. Chen Ting is angry with Jian Jian who feels bad. Ling Xiao has to accompany Mei Ying who keeps asking for him. But he makes it clear to his mother that he won’t share the affections that he has for Jian Jian with Mei Ying. Jian Jian is unhappy as she knows Ling Xiao must be upset.

Episode 6

Jian Jian and Zi Qiu cheer Ling Xiao up in their own way. Ling Xiao’s grandmother scolds Chen Ting for making the wrong decision to abandon Ling Xiao. Chen Ting tries to give money to Hai Chao for taking care of Ling Xiao but he refuses to accept it. He tells her that he treats Ling Xiao like his own son.

Not long after, Chen Ting and Mei Ying return to Singapore. The 3 kids are happy that life would be back to normal. Jian Jian wins a word-working competition. The family happily celebrates the Spring Festival together.

Jian Jian and Ming Yue have a new classmate, Tang Can. They catch her changing out of her uniform and putting on makeup after school.

Zi Qiu’s father, Zhao Hua Guang, looks for Zi Qiu at school. But Zi Qiu is unwilling to talk to him. He tells Zi Qiu that He Mei didn’t tell him about her pregnancy when they divorced. He was also too poor to raise him then. But now, he is rich and wants to send Zi Qiu abroad for his studies. Zi Qiu learns from He Lan that his father has re-married a woman from a rich family and has found success in business. However, they are childless. Zi Qiu feels uneasy but doesn’t know how to tell Jian Jian and Ling Xiao about his father’s visit.

Jian Jian is almost last in the class again and gets reprimanded by the teacher. Tang Can is the last as she has no time for studies with her commercial shoots. She dreams of becoming an actress and her mother pressures her to appear in ads. Ming Yue has invited Jian Jian’s brothers for a meal as instructed by her mother. She finds her mother to be controlling.

Episode 7

Ming Yue’s mother treats Jian Jian and her brothers to a meal as she asks them about their higher education plans. She wants Ming Yue to take up law. Ling Xiao could see that Ming Yue is being controlled by her mother.

Jian Jian has to extract a tooth. Ling Xiao accompanies her and holds her hand to ease her fears. Hua Guang leaves a gift and food for Zi Qiu and his friends at school. Zi Qiu gets mad and throws everything back at his father. Ming Yue finds out about it and asks Jian Jian and Ling Xiao about Zi Qiu. She doesn’t know that they are unaware about Hua Guang’s visit.

Zi Qiu gets angry with Ming Yue for being a busybody. Ling Xiao chases after her. He tells her that it is not her fault and also advises her to gain some self-confidence. She begins to see Ling Xiao differently.

Hua Guang contacts Hai Chao. He is willing to pay him a million dollars as compensation but wants his son back. Both Hai Chao and He Ping shoo him out the door. Zi Qiu is also angry at Hua Guang for disturbing Hai Chao. Hai Chao opens up to Zi Qiu. He knows Zi Qiu has always felt that he (Zi Qiu) owed him. But Hai Chao tells Zi Qiu that Jian Jian has always wanted an elder brother and he sees Zi Qiu as a gift after his wife died with their unborn son. He assures Zi Qiu that he will always be there for him no matter what happens.

Jian Jian has a tiff with Tang Can. She passes a drink to Zi Qiu. His best friend, Zhuang Bei, is jealous that he has a sister.

Episode 8

Hua Guang tries to convince Hai Chao again to give back Zi Qiu to him. Hai Chao angrily rejects his request. Ming Yue and Jian Jian have to wait for Tang Can in the sun to pass her some class notes. Both of them are mad at her especially Ming Yue.

Hai Chao’s restaurant is ordered to shut for a week because of a complaint about poor hygiene. He tells the kids not to worry as it is an adult matter. Zi Qiu knows it is Hua Guang’s doing. He begs him to spare them. But Hua Guang uses Hai Chao’s livelihood to continue to pressure Zi Qiu to go back to him. He also tells Zi Qiu that it is tough for Hai Chao to support 2 kids for further studies. Zi Qiu lies to Hai Chao that he has not contacted his biological father when asked.

Hai Chao decides to use the break to further expand his restaurant into the neighboring premises. He plans to borrow money from the bank to do it in the hopes of earning more for the kids. Both Ling Xiao and Zi Qiu are already taking the college entrance exams. Ming Yue writes about Ling Xiao for her class essay assignment. Jian Jian is jealous that she didn’t mention her but only Ling Xiao. Ming Yue placates her best friend that she will write about her the next time.

Jian Jian and Ming Yue overhear Tang Can’s conversation with her parents. They find out that Tang Can has been misleading everyone at school about her parents’ background. Tang Can warns them not to expose her secret as they quarrel. She then bribes Jian Jian with expensive chocolates to get her cooperation.

Ling Xiao’s maternal grandmother is in a critical condition in the hospital.

Episode 9

Ling Xiao’s grandmother dies. Chen Ting and her husband are involved in a serious car accident in Singapore while rushing to the airport. Her husband dies on the spot while Chen Ting is critically injured. Ling Xiao will have to fly to Singapore after his grandmother’s funeral.

With all the worries about the kids and the busyness due to the restaurant’s renovation, Hai Chao’s health is also affected. Zi Qiu is concerned and thinking of taking up Hua Guang’s offer to relieve Hai Chao’s burden. Jian Jian falls down the stairs at school while worrying about Ling Xiao. She claims that somebody has pushed her. Zi Qiu calls Hua Guang and asks if it is his doing. Hua Guang angrily denies the accusation.

Hai Chao fainted due to over-exhaustion which gives Zi Qiu and Jian Jian a scare. He is fine but is told to rest more.

Zi Qiu’s Future

He Mei shows up. She returns the money Hai Chao had lent her years ago. Hua Guang has contacted her to ask her to speak to Hai Chao about Zi Qiu. He Mei tells Hai Chao that he should let Zi Qiu go abroad so that Zi Qiu will have a better future. She leaves the decision to him and she has no intention to meet Zi Qiu. He Mei has re-married and her husband doesn’t know that she has a son. She asks Hai Chao not to tell Zi Qiu that she has met him. Hai Chao is angry that she considers Zi Qiu a burden.

Chen Ting’s recovery will be a long process and she may be unable to walk. Her husband’s family will raise Mei Ying but is unwilling to take care of Chen Ting. Ling Xiao’s uncle also has to return home to his family. He suggests to Ling Xiao to further his studies in Singapore so that he can take care of his mother.

Hai Chao decides he should allow Zi Qiu to go abroad for his own good. He tries to convince He Ping to help him to persuade Zi Qiu. But Zi Qiu suddenly tells them that he wants to study overseas.

Episode 10

Hai Chao and He Ping are surprised at Zi Qiu’s decision. But Zi Qiu doesn’t want to burden Hai Chao in financing his studies. Hai Chao is sad but agrees for him to go. Zi Qiu is also crying over the difficult decision. Jian Jian is still blissfully ignorant as she buys her 2 brothers shoes as gifts.

Ling Xiao is scolded by his uncle as cold-blooded when he says he wants to go home. Mei Ying celebrates his birthday with him. When Ling Xiao returns home, Jian Jian is delighted. She doesn’t know that Ling Xiao has decided to take care of his mother and study medicine in Singapore.

Ling Xiao and Zi Qiu inform each other of their intention to leave home. Each is expecting the other would be around for Jian Jian. They end up fighting. Jian Jian is mad that they didn’t discuss their decisions with her beforehand. She doesn’t want them to go and ends up crying in bed. Ling Xiao and Zi Qiu try to comfort her to no avail. Jian Jian questions Ling Xiao whether they still have anything to do with each other since they are not family anyway. Ling Xiao replies that they would be together forever once they are grown up.

Zi Qiu is miserable for hurting Jian Jian. Hai Chao tells him that all kids will leave home eventually and wants Zi Qiu to have a brighter future. He Ping is mad that the Chen family has passed the burden of looking after Chen Ting onto Ling Xiao. Jian Jian has quietly gone to stay with her maternal grandmother. Both the boys find the shoes that Jian Jian has bought for them while packing. Zi Qiu hugs the box and cries. Ling Xiao puts them on.

Episode 11

Ling Xiao asks Ming Yue to take care of Jian Jian for him. Both the boys left. But Jian Jian refuses to come back from her grandmother’s place to send them off. She is sad and angry. Jian Jian also doesn’t like it that others are saying that her father has raised ungrateful boys. She begins to feel that Ling Xiao and Zi Qiu are not family to begin with.

Jian Jian doesn’t want to take his brothers’ calls until her father makes her see that what they are doing is out of necessity. She understands and but finds it hard to let go. Eventually, she keeps in touch with them but is also disappointed that Ling Xiao has another younger sister whom he cares about.

Time passes and it is 2012. Jian Jian has entered college and studying sculpturing. They still keep in touch but have become distant. Jian Jian is not very keen to talk to Ling Xiao and Zi Qiu whenever they call. She is further disappointed when Zi Qiu decides not to come back after graduation but stays on to learn new skills. Ling Xiao will ask about Jian Jian through Ming Yue.

After graduation, Jian Jian opens a woodworking studio with her senior, Du Juan. Ling Xiao is taking up internship in Singapore for a further 2 years. He tells Jian Jian that his mother still needs him. She is disappointed but keeps quiet about it. Time flies and they don’t miss each other anymore with each having their own busy lives to lead.

It’s 2018.

Jian Jian is 25 years old. Tang Can returns from Beijing with her hopes of being a star dashed. Jian Jian, Ming Yue, and Tang Can become housemates.

Episode 12

It’s May 2019.

Ming Yue has just returned from a business trip and buying a car. Jian Jian’s sculpture is part of an exhibition item. She has won numerous awards for her work. Ling Xiao returns from Singapore and is received by Ming Yue who has helped him to rent a place to stay. Ming Yue is excited to see him. Ling Xiao goes back to see Hai Chao who is delighted that he is back for good. He will be starting work at the dental hospital the next day.

Jian Jian attends the art exhibition. She crowds around an exhibit and is pushed. Someone catches her from behind. A misunderstanding occurs that he is a molester. Jian Jian files a police report only to discover that he is Zi Qiu who just wanted to give her a surprise. Ling Xiao rushes to the police station when he hears from Hai Chao what happened to Jian Jian. The 3 of them meet each other again.

After 9 years of not seeing each other, they don’t know what to say to one another anymore. Their relationship becomes awkward. Ling Xiao informs his father that he will be moving into an apartment opposite Jian Jian’s. Zi Qiu still has not gone back to see Hai Chao but keeps observing him from afar.

Zhuang Bei and Tang Can bump into each other at the lift of her apartment unit. They find each other familiar. Jian Jian reflects on her time with Ling Xiao and Zi Qiu. She doesn’t know how to face them again. Zi Qiu is also at a loss on how to communicate with Jian Jian.

Jian Jian has a toothache and Ming Yue forces her to see a dentist.

Episode 13

The dentist is Ling Xiao but Jian Jian doesn’t recognize him. He only unmasks himself after the treatment. Jian Jian feels awkward being with him and quickly leaves.

Zi Qiu discusses with Ling Xiao about Jian Jian’s uneasiness with them. Ling Xiao feels it is understandable as Jian Jian isn’t a little girl anymore and they are not her brothers. Ling Xiao has no plans on how to get close to Jian Jian except to give her time. Zi Qiu is planning a surprise.

Zi Qiu moves into the apartment opposite Jian Jian’s. The owner has reneged on his agreement with Ming Yue and leases it to Zi Qiu who has offered a much higher rent. She goes to the apartment to clean up only to bump into a half-naked Zi Qiu coming out of the shower. He runs back into the bathroom. Ming Yue pleads with him to let go of the apartment as she has rented it for her crush. But he declines.

Zi Qiu gives Jian Jian a surprise at his newly renovated cafe. But she feels uncomfortable with the lavish attention he showers on her. She goes home to complain to her housemates about Ling Xiao and Zi Qiu only to find out that Ling Xiao is in the house at Ming Yue’s invitation.

Ling Xiao is thinking of co-renting the opposite unit. Tang Can offers to talk to the new tenant and they discover that he is Zi Qiu. Ming Yue is embarrassed at their earlier encounter and warns Zi Qiu not to tell Ling Xiao that she has a crush on him.

Tang Can and Ming Yue have different opinions on siblings becoming neighbors. Jian Jian is just feeling awkward with the 2 men as they are like strangers to her now.

Episode 14

Jian Jian decides that she should view Ling Xiao and Zi Qiu as distant relatives. The next morning, she invites Zi Qiu to go back home to have a birthday meal with He Ping. Zi Qiu is surprised that Jian Jian is proactively approaching him.

Du Juan encourages Jian Jian to date. A fellow artist, Ran, has asked Jian Jian to be a couple. At work, Ling Xiao helps Dr. Feng Xi Xi to handle a crying young patient. She thanks him. Zi Qiu goes back to see Hai Chao who is delighted. He still regards Hai Chao as his father even though Hua Guang has paid for his education and living expenses. Zi Qiu informs Hai Chao about his new cafe.

Hai Chao tells Zi Qiu that he is grateful as long as Zi Qiu is happy and become a good person. During the meal, they learn Ling Xiao had been scarred by boiling water. He kept quiet because he didn’t want them to worry. Jian Jian also mentions He Ping suffered an injury once but it was pointless to inform Ling Xiao and Zi Qiu as they were so far away. It spoils the mood somewhat before everyone casts it aside to eat together.

After dinner, both Zi Qiu and Ling Xiao want to send Jian Jian home. But she tells them she is meeting her boyfriend which shocks them. Zi Qiu chases after her taxi but lost her. He sees her mother in a passing car instead. Ling Xiao tries to call Jian Jian but unsuccessful. Chen Ting keeps sending messages to Ling Xiao and expecting him to go back. The neighbors tease Hai Chao that he could choose between Ling Xiao and Zi Qiu to be his son-in-law. Ling Xiao is open to the idea.

Episode 15

Ming Yue is now a news reporter. Ling Xiao asks her about Jian Jian’s boyfriend. She has no idea and neither does Tang Can. Jian Jian tells Du Juan that she decides to date to get inspiration for her artwork although she hasn’t met the guy before.

Ming Yue and Tang Can question Jian Jian about her boyfriend with Ling Xiao and Zi Qiu watching. They don’t agree with her choice as they find him weird. The guy backs out at the last minute from attending Zi Qiu’s cafe opening. Ling Xiao asks Ming Yue to keep an eye on Jian Jian. Ming Yue still hopes of being Ling Xiao’s girlfriend. Her mother is critical of her choice of job and prefers that she takes up a civil service position.

Jian Jian’s Date

Ling Xiao sets his apartment access for Jian Jian although she isn’t keen. Zi Qiu makes Jian Jian breakfast and offers to do it daily. She feels uneasy and declines. Xi Xi questions Jian Jian if Ling Xiao has someone he likes when she goes for her follow-up treatment. Ling Xiao comes forward and tells Xi Xi that he does as Jian Jian scoots away.

Tang Can is at Zi Qiu’s cafe for a blind date. Zhuang Bei scares the man off when he starts putting her down. He is now an assistant lawyer while Tang Can sells cosplay costumes online. She receives a call from Ming Yue who notices from Jian Jian’s social media post that she has gone on a date. Zi Qui calls Ling Xiao. They panic when they can’t find or contact her and report to He Ping at the police station.

He Ping calls Hai Chao who is puzzled by their concern because Jian Jian and the guy, Zheng Shu Ran, are at his noodle shop. Ling Xiao and Zi Qiu rush over.

Episode 16

Ling Xiao and Zi Qiu scrutinize Shu Ran. Later, they ask Jian Jian to break up with him as they don’t find Shu Ran to be good for her. Jian Jian is furious. She scolds them for intruding into her life after their return when they are not her real brothers. She feels pressured. Ling Xiao is hurt by her words. He recalls the time when he saved her from being abducted. He Ping became Jian Jian’s godfather. Hai Chao also told Jian Jian to acknowledge Ling Xiao as an elder brother. Mrs. Qian teased them that it is like a marriage arrangement between the 2 families.

Zi Qiu apologizes to Jian Jian and is afraid that she doesn’t want them anymore. But she tells him that they don’t need to do anything for her as they don’t owe her. Furthermore, she is grown-up and can’t be clinging to them like before. However, Zi Qiu still feels that he owes her. Hai Chao thinks he should just let the kids to settle the problem among themselves. Chen Ting calls He Ping. He finds out that Ling Xiao didn’t inform his mother that he is returning permanently.

Zi Qiu continue to cook breakfast for Jian Jian and her housemates. Ming Yue’s mother drops by again. She fusses over and nags the girls as usual. She also disagrees with Ming Yue’s wish to further her career in Beijing. Tang Can is miserable that her career is going nowhere. Jian Jian goes for follow-up treatment at the dental hospital but Ling Xiao ignores her. She avoids discussing about her brothers with others.

Episode 17

Jian Jian bumps into Ling Xiao at the apartment lobby. She sees his luggage and assumes that he is returning to Singapore. Jian Jian apologizes to him and tells him not to be impulsive. Furthermore, he and Zi Qiu are still her brothers. But Ling Xiao is only throwing away the previous tenant’s belongings. Jian Jian is relieved but also embarrass. She notices Zi Qiu hanging a cake at her door when she gets back.

Zhuang Bei advises Zi Qiu to seek He Ping’s help if he wants to trace his mother’s whereabouts since she is in town. Tang Can has dinner with her father who asks her to attend her mother’s birthday. But she has a strain relationship with her mother who sees her as a failure.

Zi Qiu has a bike accident and lands in hospital. When Jian Jian arrives at the hospital, Tang Can plays a joke on her and says that Zi Qiu is dead. She immediately cries until Ling Xiao assures her that Zi Qiu is fine. Zi Qiu has unknowingly taken Ling Xiao’s sleeping pills. Thus, Ling Xiao’s insomnia becomes exposed. He Ping is concerned and tells his son not to hide things from him. He also informs him of Chen Ting’s call. Ling Xiao promises to talk to his mother.

Jian Jian’s relationship with Zi Qiu and Ling Xiao improves following the incident. She asks Ling Xiao if he has a girlfriend. He tells her no but he has someone that he loves. Shu Ran drops by the hospital to see Jian Jian. He gives Zi Qiu a buttocks sculpture as a gift. Shu Ran likes to observe women’s behind and make it into an art. Ling Xiao asks Shu Ran to reconsider his relationship with Jian Jian when they lunch together.

Episode 18

Jian Jian and Ming Yue redecorate Ling Xiao’s bedroom to help him to sleep better. Zi Qiu is discharge from the hospital. He invites Zhuang Bei to join them for dinner. Zhuang Bei immediately falls for Ming Yue while Tang Can has feelings for him. He asks Ming Yue about her opinion on Ling Xiao and Zi Qiu but she brushes him off. Zhuang Bei thinks either of the 2 men will end up with Jian Jian.

Jian Jian mistakenly picks up Ling Xiao’s phone. It is Mei Ying who demands to know when Ling Xiao will return to Singapore. Jian Jian is surprised but keeps quiet about it. She appears drunk and falls asleep on the couch. Ling Xiao carries her back to her room and looks lovingly at her. Ming Yue hints to Ling Xiao that she also wants somebody to take care of her.

The next morning, Jian Jian tells Zi Qiu about the phone call but there is nothing that they can do. Hai Chao tries to talk to Zi Qiu about his mother but he pretends to have no interest to meet her. But Zi Qiu is still secretly looking around. Zi Qiu notices Ling Xiao’s phone message that he has to return to Singapore. Ling Xiao admits so. He also tells Jian Jian he has to go back to handle some matters.

Xi Xi fishes for information from Ming Yue about Ling Xiao’s crush during high school because he told her that has fallen in love with someone 2 years younger. Ming Yue assumes Ling Xiao is referring to her. Her mother sets her up on a blind date. Ming Yue gets mad and tells her mother that she already has someone she loves.

Episode 19

Zi Qiu still does not have a good impression of Shu Ran and asks Jian Jian to break up with him again. Jian Jian keeps talking about her brothers while on a date with Shu Ran. He thinks they should act like real couples but Jian Jian is not ready for kisses although she tries to kiss him when asked.

Ming Yue prepares a souvenir pack for Ling Xiao to bring to Singapore. Jian Jian is afraid that he won’t come back but feels re-assured when he shows her a confirmed return ticket. Ming Yue sends him to the airport. She kisses his cheek as a way to confess her feelings. Ling Xiao is surprised. Ming Yue tells him to give her an answer after he returns from his trip.

Jian Jian has a tiff with Zhou Miao regarding a client’s order. He is employed by Du Juan and they are now a couple. He Lan drops by for a visit. She quietly tells Hai Chao that she needs to borrow money for her husband’s cancer treatment. Zi Qiu and Jian Jian overhear their conversation. Zi Qiu offers to give his aunt the money although he is also running low on cash.

Ling Xiao arrives in Singapore. Mei Ying has a strain relationship with her mother. Chen Ting is not happy that Ling Xiao is leaving her. When Jian Jian calls, she throws his phone onto the floor. Ling Xiao becomes uncontactable. Hai Chao wants He Ping to look for He Mei. He knows Zi Qiu still thinks of his mother.

Ming Yue tells Jian Jian and Tang Can that she has confessed to Ling Xiao. But Jian Jian is only worried that she can’t get through to him.

Episode 20

Zi Qiu is annoyed with Shu Ran again. Zhuang Bei tells Zi Qiu that with all his attention being centered on Jian Jian, he could be in love with her. Zi Qiu denies it but begins to feel self-conscious in her company.

Jian Jian is still thinking about Ling Xiao. He is expected to be home before her mother’s death anniversary but Chen Ting is making things hard for him to leave. Ming Yue happily prepares a meal in anticipation of his arrival. But Ling Xiao didn’t turn up. Jian Jian is disappointed. Zi Qiu tries to re-assure her with a few words.

Jian Jian and Zi Qiu go back to their father’s place to pay their respects to her late mother. At night, Jian Jian get drunk while burning paper offerings. Zi Qiu carries her back. She tells him not to leave her. Zi Qiu promises that she will always have him around if Ling Xiao can’t return.

Ling Xiao manages to rush back to pay his respects to Jian Jian’s mother. He had called his father earlier but the latter had forgotten to inform Jian Jian. Ling Xiao rushes back to see Jian Jian in the middle of the night. She is fast asleep due to the wine. He kisses her on the forehead and cheek. The room door is ajar. Ming Yue witnesses it but keeps quiet in disappointment. Ling Xiao is moving close to Jian Jian’s lips when she opens her eyes. She sees him and pretends to fall back asleep.

The next morning, Ming Yue goes back to her mother’s place. Jian Jian is confused about the kisses. Tang Can questions Ling Xiao about Ming Yue’s confession. He denies being interested in her. She then guesses who his love interest might be.

Episode 21

Tang Can innocently asks if Ling Xiao is interested in her instead. Ling Xiao ignores her. Jian Jian starts to get uncomfortable. When she bumps into Ling Xiao at the lift, he apologizes for losing control the night before but also makes it clear about his feelings for her. Jian Jian couldn’t accept his confession.

Shu Ran tells ZI Qiu that he has broken up with Jian Jian. Zi Qiu informs Ling Xiao the good news. Jian Jian also confides in Du Juan about the break up. She tried to kiss Shu Ran but couldn’t bring herself to actually do it. Shu Ran also felt they are better off as friends and asked for a break up.

Ling Xiao tells Xi Xi that the girl he loves is Jian Jian. Jian Jian is bothered and tries to convince Ling Xiao that he has just mixed up family kinship with love. However, he reminds her that he had told her before that he wanted to marry her back in high school.

Zi Qiu is still wondering about his mother. He Ping has found out that He Mei has been back for 2 years. Hai Chao looks for her at her beauty salon. She now has a 4-year-old son. He hopes she could meet Zi Qiu to erase his psychological scar. But He Mei declines. She pretends to be uncaring although she had secretly gone to spy on Zi Qiu at his cafe.

Zi Qiu tries to get ideas from Zhuang Bei on how to woo Jian Jian. He has to get her to see him differently from a brother. He holds Jian Jian’s hands as he teaches her how to decorate a cake. Jian Jian tells him that she will be staying with her father for a few days.

Episode 22

Zi Qiu follows Jian Jian back to see her father. He asks Hai Chao’s permission to woo Jian Jian. Hai Chao asks him to consider carefully. He also wants Zi Qiu to promise him that he will remain as Jian Jian’s brother even if they can’t be lovers. Zi Qiu agrees.

Coincidentally, Ling Xiao is also at his father’s place. Jian Jian denies trying to avoid him. He asks Jian Jian to think of him as a man. He doesn’t want the brother label as that would be an obstacle to their relationship. Jian Jian wants to keep it a secret especially from Zi Qiu. She also tells Ling Xiao to let her consider seeing him as more than a brother.

Next, Zi Qiu also confesses to her. Jian Jian is in disbelief. She orders him not to tell Ling Xiao. The next morning, she leaves early to avoid the 2 men. Du Juan and Zhou Miao advise her not to read those anime books on brotherly love to avoid having any ideas. A foreign company is interested Jian Jian’s work. Zhou Miao encourages Du Juan to sign a contract with Jian Jian to ensure she doesn’t lose out.

Hai Chao informs Zi Qiu about He Mei’s return but she didn’t express an interest to meet him. Ling Xiao advises Zi Qiu to meet her instead to tell her that since she abandoned him to begin with, she shouldn’t look for him should she has difficulties in the future. Zi Qiu leaves a message at He Mei’s beauty salon.

Ling Xiao drops by Jian Jian’s studio and asks her out for lunch. She accompanies him to buy a new phone. Ming Yue has sent him a message that she saw him kissing Jian Jian and that she will move out.

Episode 23

Tang Can continues to play mahjong with Zhuang Bei’s mother and keeps her happy. Zhuang Bei thanks her. She thinks he is interested in her when in fact, he is after Ming Yue.

He Mei looks for Zi Qiu who just wants to know why she left him behind when she had promised otherwise before she left for Shenzhen. She honestly tells him that she had no means to take care of him then. The decision to abandon him was for both their own good. Zi Qiu returns an old mirror case with her picture on it to He Mei. It is his way of ending their relationship and from then on, they will be strangers although it hurts him.

Jian Jian waits for Ming Yue but they end up arguing. Jian Jian blurts out that Zi Qiu is also interested in her. Ming Yue feels embarrassed and thinks Jian Jian is fooling with her as she once had a crush on Zi Qiu in high school. Jian Jian ends up crying at home. Tang Can asks Ling Xiao to comfort his sister. Then, Zi Qiu comes home and tells them of his meeting with his mother.

Jian Jian quietly comforts Zi Qiu and holds his hand just like how she did it when they were kids and he was being bullied for being abandoned. The next day, Jian Jian seeks his help to be an interpreter for a foreign business deal for her studio. The meeting goes well. Zhou Miao keeps pushing Jian Jian to promote her works and socialize with well-connected people. Jian Jian doesn’t like it and Zi Qiu helps her to put Zhou Miao in his place. She tells him Du Juan will realize soon that Zhou Miao is not a good boyfriend.

Episode 24

Ling Xiao has a nightmare about his mother coming back to accuse him of abandoning her and his sister. He hugs Jian Jian for comfort. Ling Xiao tells Jian Jian that it is Mei Ying who convinces his mother to let him come back.

Jian Jian scrapes her knee and the conversation turns to an incident when she fell down the stairs back in high school. She tells them that she lied about being pushed to avoid being scolded by her father. Zi Qiu is frustrated as he thought it was Hao Guang’s doing and he left partly because he was afraid that his biological father would hurt Jian Jian after sabotaging her father’s noodle shop. Jian Jian is at a loss over the affections of her 2 brothers.

He Mei looks for Hai Chao at his noodle shop. Mrs. Qian recognizes her. He Mei asks Hai Chao about Hao Guang as she feels her ex-husband wouldn’t let go of Zi Qiu so easily. She also gives Hai Chao her friend’s contact who could help Zi Qiu as she could see that his cafe isn’t doing too well. However, He Mei doesn’t want Zi Qiu to know. She tells Hai Chao that she owes Zi Qiu.

Quarrels

Ming Yue still wants to move out after talking to Jian Jian. She is angry with herself and needs time to overcome her own inadequacies. Hence, she asks Jian Jian not to pressure her. Jian Jian feels miserable over their friendship.

Tang Can quarrels with her mother when she goes to attend her birthday meal. Her mother lies to relatives about her work to cover her lack of achievement. Back home, Jian Jian and Tang Can have a tiff as well when Jian Jian tells Tang Can to consider doing something else rather than be an online seller. Tang Can thinks Jian Jian is looking down on her.

Jian Jian feels frustrated and goes over to Ling Xiao’s place to calm down. Ling Xiao kisses her on the lips to make her forget her troubles. She is shocked and runs back to her unit. Ming Yue’s mother orders her to move back home permanently to concentrate on taking the civil service exams. She doesn’t like her hanging out with Tang Can whom she sees as a failure. Ming Yue is angry.

Episode 25

Ming Yue gets frustrated with her mother and moves back in with her housemates. She teases Jian Jian that she can’t miss her predicament of being caught between her 2 brothers. Jian Jian is angry that Zhou Miao has exaggerated her achievements in the publicity write-ups and arranged for her to do interviews.

Ling Xiao apologizes to Ming Yue for misleading and making use of her while he was in Singapore so that he could learn more about Jian Jian. He also doesn’t think that Ming Yue actually loves him as she only knows him superficially. She is also more embarrassed than hurt when she found out about his interest in Jian Jian. Ming Yue explains to Tang Can that perhaps she is in love with the idea of having a secret liking for Ling Xiao than actually loving him.

Jian Jian is mad when she overhears Tang Can being jealous of her success. Ling Xiao cheers her up when he bumps into her at the dessert shop. Jian Jian encourages Zi Qiu to think of ways to increase his business. She also tells him that they can only be siblings. She suggests that he is only interested in taking care of Jian Jan the kid but she is now a grown woman who can take care of herself. In Hai Chao’s family, he would be the eldest son while she is the daughter. As for Ling Xiao, she sees him as belonging to a different family unit.

Ming Yue tries to break the ice between Tang Can and Jian Jian. Tang Can tells them that she still dreams of becoming an actress but the more they encourage her each time she fails an audition, the more shameful she feels.

Episode 26

Jian Jian scolds Tang Can for being her own worst enemy. They quarrel before Jian Jian storms off to Ling Xiao’s apartment. Tang Can follows her but Zhuang Bei is there with Ling Xiao. Zhuang Bei takes the opportunity to give back Tang Can the same gold necklace that she has bought for his mother. He is unaware that Tang Can has feelings for him. Both Ming Yue and Jian Jian admonish him for being insensitive.

While Ling Xiao is comforting Jian Jian, his mother calls. After the call, Jian Jian mentions to Ling Xiao that she has been worried whether his mother will accept their relationship. Ling Xiao is happy that Jian Jian has thought about their future. Jian Jian asks him when exactly he fell for her. He replies that it was back in high school and it is his instinct to be with her. It is also a form of self-help for him given his bitter experience. They are almost caught kissing when Zi Qiu barges into the room.

Ming Yue advises Jian Jian to make things clear with the 2 men to avoid breaking their brotherhood. Zi Qiu knows the woman who comes by to help him is He Mei’s friend. He declines her help and tells Hai Chao no need to bother strangers with his problems.

Zi Qiu’s Cashflow Problems

Jian Jian finds out that Zi Qiu is facing a cashflow shortage for his business. Hua Guang has long cut off financial support as Zi Qiu refuses to acknowledge him as his father. Zi Qiu supported himself through university and the cafe investment is his own money. They discuss the issue with Ling Xiao who advises him to close the business. But both Jian Jian and Zi Qiu disagree with his suggestion.

Later, Jian Jian and Zi Qiu have an argument when she pays for the groceries. He feels he should take care of her instead of the other way round which makes Jian Jian mad when they are family. Tang Can overhears their argument while Jian Jian talks about it with Ming Yue. Jian Jian knows Zi Qiu hates being pitied upon. With his problems, Jian Jian and Ling Xiao decide to postpone telling him about their relationship.

Du Juan arranges for a meal to celebrate the studio’s success in getting more royalties. Tang Can lies to Zhuang Bei that she has gotten over him. He apologizes and tells her that he already has someone he loves but hasn’t confess. Tang Can cries alone in the toilet.

Episode 27

Jian Jian’s online rating about her confusion with her 2 brothers’ affections that she has posted earlier becomes viral. Ling Xiao and Zi Qiu quarrel over it. Zi Qiu feels abandoned again when he knows that Jian Jian has chosen Ling Xiao. The next morning, Zi Qiu tells Jian Jian that he isn’t angry with her but he has nothing to say to Ling Xiao.

Chen Ting calls Ling Xiao from Singapore to ask for directions. Ling Xiao gets worried and calls Mei Ying who informs him that their mother seems fine.

Ming Yue meets Zhuang Bei at Zi Qiu’s cafe for work. They are worried about Zi Qiu although he seems fine. He Mei tells her friend that she doesn’t want to snatch back Zi Qiu when Hai Chao was the one who raised him although her decision to abandon him was for Zi Qiu’s own good. He Mei’s other son, Dong Dong, has developmental issues and the kindergarten bars him to continue studying there.

Ling Xiao and Jian Jian go back to her college to look at the trees she had planted. He kisses her under the tree. However, during dinner they have a tiff over Zi Qiu. Ling Xiao wants Jian Jian to keep her distance from Zi Qiu while she wants them to be more discerning in front of him. Ling Xiao feels Jian Jian merely pities him and bias towards Zi Qiu. She realizes that Ling Xiao is a broken man because of his past experience.

Jian Jian asks Ming Yue about Ling Xiao’s life while in Singapore since they used to communicate. But Ming Yue has no idea. However, she mentions that Zi Qiu could be suffering mentally as well with his past baggage. Jian Jian calls her father for some encouragement.

Episode 28

Jian Jian feels better after talking to his father. The next day, she asks Ling Xiao out for lunch and vows to keep him company as best as she could. She also takes the initiative to kiss him. At night, He Ping brings Ling Xiao to see his traditional doctor friend to treat his son’s insomnia. The doctor suggests Ling Xiao should seek help for his mental well-being.

He Ping advises his son to talk about his problems and not keep everything in his heart. Ling Xiao knows his father cares about him. He thanks him for his concern. Jian Jian tries to give Zi Qiu money to tie him over. But he gets angry with her and tells her that he doesn’t want her pity.

Mrs. Qian is still trying to matchmake Hai Chao with Ms. Zhang who seems interested in him. But Hai Chao tells Mrs. Qian that he has no interest. Mrs. Qian then informs Hai Chao that it is Jian Jian who is anxious to get a partner for him and has asked for her help.

Jian Jian wants to know about Ling Xiao’s life in Singapore. He relates to her his worry over his mother’s condition following her accident. They were afraid that she couldn’t walk again. She was angry and moody. She lost hope and attempted suicide. Ling Xiao developed anxiety and couldn’t sleep as he was afraid that his mother would kill herself anytime. Jian Jian comforts him.

He Mei bumps into Zi Qiu at a hotel restaurant when he is offering Dong Dong some food. He has become a desert chef there. Zi Qiu ignores her. He brings home an abandoned puppy and bumps into Jian Jian who tries to cheer him up as they bathe the puppy together.

Episode 29

Jian Jian tells Zi Qiu that she feels uneasy if he is angry and ignores her because they are family. Zi Qiu softens and grudgingly accepts her relationship with Ling Xiao. They go back together to see her father and inform him about their relationship. His only worry is Chen Ting might object and cause trouble.

Zhuang Bei’s mother still wants Tang Can to pretend to be her son’s girlfriend. Zhuang Bei meets Tang Can to persuade her to play the role one more time. Tang Can refuses and knocks his phone off his hand. She sees that he has Ming Yue’s photo as his wallpaper. Tang Can ends up crying alone when she gets home.

Ling Xiao helps Jian Jian to get Zi Qiu’s credit card number and pays off his debts. Ming Yue is miserable as her mother keeps pressuring her to be a civil servant. Jian Jian and Ling Xiao follow Zi Qiu and find out that he is working as a hotel chef for the night shift.

He Mei looks for Hai Chao to tell him about Zi Qiu’s lack of funds. She wants Hua Guang’s number and then threatens Hua Guang to give Zi Qiu money. He Mei and Hai Chao have a chat and talks about Dong Dong who is autistic.

Zi Qiu raises a ruckus that Hua Guang has sent him money. Hua Guang tells him that it is He Mei who has demanded it. He wants Zi Qiu to forgive him and stopping his funds is his way of making Zi Qiu return to him when Zi Qiu refuses to break ties with Hai Chao. Zi Qiu is mad at He Mei and runs to her beauty salon. Jian Jian and Ling Xiao find him there as she comforts him.

Episode 30

Hai Chao and He Mei arrive. Zi Qiu tells his mother that he doesn’t hate her or Hao Guang but doesn’t understand why he is the one who always gets abandoned. His aim all along is to earn money on his own to provide Jian Jian and Hai Chao with the best because they have always given him a home to go back to. Zi Qiu begs his mother to spare him as she is the one who chose to abandon him. Hence, he doesn’t want her to intrude into his life. He Mei is devastated.

The next morning, Hai Chao tells his 3 kids that he is not a good father as he has been burying his head in the sand. He doesn’t know how to ask them or solve their problems. He also tells Zi Qiu that He Mei left for Shenzhen because she was mistakenly accused in public of being a home-wrecker and was evicted by her landlady.

Jian Jian tries to advice Zi Qiu but he wants to think things through on his own. He Mei falls sick as she feels sad over her relationship with Zi Qiu. Her friend suggests that she considers Hai Chao since both of them are single. But He Mei thinks it is shameless of her to do so as she has made him suffer much. Moreover, Hai Chao thinks she has re-married with a kid.

He Ping is happy with the news about Ling Xiao and Jian Jian. He messages his son to let him know his delight and support. Zhuang Bei confesses to Ming Yue. She tells him off and unsure of how to break the news to Tang Can. Jian Jian tells her to just do it.

Episode 31

Ming Yue informs Tang Can about Zhuang Bei’s confession. Tang Can is nonchalant about it because she already knows earlier. She is excitedly preparing for her interview with a producer for a role in a movie. Ming Yue asks Zi Qiu to tell Zhuang Bei not to disturb her anymore as they are not compatible.

Ming Yue’s mother has used the family’s savings to put down a deposit for an apartment. She wants Ming Yue to buy it for her future. Ming Yue is frustrated that her mother keeps bulldozing her way through her life. She also firmly tells Zhuang Bei not to pursue her anymore. Tang Can is disappointed that she is only wanted as a stand-in for the main actress. Jian Jian buys a pair of sneakers for Ling Xiao for his upcoming birthday and adds in another for Zi Qiu.

Ming Yue and Tang Can talk about their problems with Jian Jian. She advises them to break out of their cocoon and reminisces about her father who she feels is getting old. Tang Can decides to give up her dream of becoming an actress as she realizes her parents are getting old too and they care about her in their own way. Ming Yue talks to her father about the apartment and he agrees that they should hold on.

He Ping teases Hai Chao about Ms. Zhang which makes their 3 kids laugh. But Hai Chao insists that Ms. Zhang is unsuitable for him. They also talk about Ling Xiao’s coming birthday celebration.

Episode 32

Tang Can informs Zhuang Bei that she will help him one last time as a friend and will be starting a new job as a museum guide. She also tells him that he is a good man regardless of Ming Yue’s rejection.

Chen Ting and Mei Ying arrive to give him a surprise for his birthday. Mei Ying is not too fond of Jian Jian but Chen Ting is polite. She wants to celebrate Ling Xiao’s birthday together with Hai Chao and He Ping. He Ping is wary of his ex-wife’s return while Hai Chao asks him not to worry unnecessarily. Jian Jian knows Ling Xiao will have trouble sleeping and keeps him company.

He Mei meets her sister at the hospital as the latter’s husband is undergoing chemotherapy. They have lunch together and talk about the past. He Mei gives He Lan some money to help her out. Dong Dong goes missing and someone sends him to the police station. However, the police need He Mei’s proof of guardianship. She ends up asking He Ping for help.

He Mei has to tell He Ping and Hai Chao that Dong Dong is her ex-staff’s son. Her ex-staff is in prison for killing her drunkard husband and she is temporarily looking after Dong Dong for her. He Mei admits to Hai Chao that she didn’t re-marry. She lied about her marital status because she had promised to give Zi Qiu to him. Hence, she felt that she shouldn’t meet Zi Qiu and being married is a convenient excuse.

Chen Ting and Mei Ying go to Ling Xiao’s workplace and start handing out souvenirs to his colleagues. He doesn’t like it but offers to bring them around the next day. Ming Yue picks up her father at the airport.

Episode 33

Ming Yue’s parents have a big disagreement over the apartment purchase with divorce being brought up. Tang Can’s relationship with her mother improves as she takes up a stable job. She is now contented with her life. Du Juan has an argument with Zhou Miao. Mei Ying picks up Ling Xiao’s birthday cake from Zi Qiu’s cafe. She insists on paying him for the cake on Chen Ting’s instructions which leaves Zi Qiu flabbergasted.

During the birthday dinner, Zi Qiu sends a message to Jian Jian that he will not be coming. Chen Ting makes things awkward for everyone when she drops the message that Ling Xiao is her son and not Hai Chao’s. Mei Ying tells Jian Jian that both her and her mother don’t like her one bit when they bump into each other in the toilet. During the car ride back to the hotel, Ling Xiao tells his mother that she should go back to Singapore soon with Mei Ying. But Chen Ting still wants to hang around for a while more. When Ling Xiao returns home, Jian Jian and Zi Qiu celebrate his birthday with him again.

He Mei’s Story

Hai Chao drops by to see He Mei. He feels that He Mei is hiding things from him and he wants the truth. He Mei tells him that 2 months after arriving in Shenzhen, she was arrested for causing a client’s death. The client was injuring a colleague for the allergic she suffered following a beauty treatment. He Mei tried to help but the client died after falling and hitting her head. She was jailed for 4 years.

He Lan visited her in jail. He Mei wrote the letter to give Zi Qiu to Hai Chao. She asked He Lan to tell Hai Chao that she didn’t want Zi Qiu anymore and encourage Zi Qiu to forget his mother. He Mei was afraid Hai Chao wouldn’t want to take care of Zi Qiu if the guardianship is only temporary. Hai Chao advises He Mei that Zi Qiu has a right to know the truth. He also tells her that no matter how good a father he is, there is a missing piece in Zi Qiu’s heart that he cannot fill.

At the same time, He Lan tells Zi Qiu the truth about his mother when he visits He Lan’s husband at the hospital. He Lan then calls Hai Chao to let him know what she has done.

Episode 34

Hai Chao tells He Mei that Zi Qiu has found out the truth. Jian Jian and Ling Xiao rush to accompany Zi Qiu. Zi Qiu actually feels a little relieved that he was not abandoned. There is also nothing to forgive as he doesn’t hate He Mei. Later, he tells Hai Chao that he will not do anything about his mother. Hai Chao understands his feelings.

Ling Xiao suggests to Jian Jian that they should get married. But Jian Jian is non-committal. Ming Yue’s mother rummages through her daughter’s drawers for the document needed to buy the apartment. She finds that Ming Yue has not been studying for the civil service entrance exam and they end up quarreling. Ming Yue makes it clear that she wants to be a journalist and go to Beijing. She accuses her mother of controlling her and she had purposely got a lower mark for her exams to avoid being qualified to do law as her mother wanted.

Jian Jian tries to calm Ming Yue’s mother who asks her to pass her daughter a message that she doesn’t care anymore what Ming Yue wants to do. Ming Yue immediately applies to go to Beijing.

Zhuang Bei is at Zi Qiu’s place. He meets Tang Can again and tries to cheer her up when she seems unhappy for being looked down upon by Ming Yue’s mother and also worrying about her weight. He Mei drops by Hai Chao’s noodle shop. His worker records their meeting and sends it to Jian Jian. He Mei thinks Hai Chao is right and she should show more concern towards Zi Qiu. Jian Jian shows Zi Qiu the recording but he is not interested to know what is going on between them.

Mei Ying calls Ling Xiao about their mother.

Episode 35

Chen Ting wants to rent an apartment to live near Ling Xiao. Mei Ying quarrels with her as she wants to return to Singapore. Chen Ting starts acting pitiful. Mei Ying accuses her mother of pretending to be pathetic. Ling Xiao reluctantly agrees for his mother to stay. When Jian Jian appears, Ling Xiao kisses her in front of his mother who isn’t happy.

Ling Xiao is feeling anxious again because of his mother. He hugs Jian Jian tightly after his mother leaves. Zi Qiu bumps into Mei Ying who is sitting outside the hotel after quarreling with her mother. He brings her back to Jian Jian’s place. Her housemates cannot get along with her. The next morning, she follows Zi Qiu to his cafe.

He Ping warns Chen Ting to accept Jian Jian as Ling Xiao loves her deeply. He tells Chen Ting that their son has anxiety and depression and Jian Jian is instrumental in Ling Xiao’s recovery. Chen Ting claims that she doesn’t hate Jian Jian but just not familiar with her. He Ping then informs his son that he has talked to his mother about Jian Jian. Ling Xiao is grateful to his father.

He Mei drops by Zi Qiu’s cafe to have a chat. She gives Zi Qiu a case with an old photo of them. Jian Jian teases her father when she catches him happily messaging with He Mei. He Ping informs Jian Jian that he has talked to Chen Ting and to tell him if Chen Ting bullies her. Zi Qiu tells Ling Xiao that he has to arrange something for Mei Ying to do as she can’t be sitting at his cafe everyday.

Tang Can complains to Ling Xiao that Mei Ying has taken the remote and change her TV channel.

Episode 36

Ling Xiao and Zi Qiu decide that Mei Ying should work at Zi Qiu’s cafe to pass her summer holiday. Mei Ying reluctantly agrees. Chen Ting and Xi Xi exchange contacts while waiting for Ling Xiao. Ling Xiao tells his mother that he wants to marry Jian Jian. But his mother tries to discourage him.

Ming Yue’s father informs his daughter about his divorce plan. He cannot stand his wife’s controlling ways any longer. Ming Yue calls her mother who angrily says she is ready for a divorce. Ming Yue is now unsure if she should still go to Beijing. Tang Can accompanies Zhuang Bei’s mother to a gathering as promised. Zhuang Bei has dug out all her Tang Can’s previous works to watch including one which didn’t manage to make it to air.

Mei Ying tells Jian Jian that her relationship with Ling Xiao will never work out because Chen Ting hates the Li family and He Ping. He Mei and Hai Chao are getting closer. She drops hints that she doesn’t mind being Jian Jian’s stepmother. A senior has implied that Jian Jian has copied his work in an interview. Zhou Miao is secretly feeling smug.

Jian Jian is upset and heads home early. She bumps into Chen Ting and Ling Xiao’s aunt and is forced to let them into Ling Xiao’s apartment. Chen Ting makes Jian Jian feels that she is only a neighbor and that her father had been paid to look after Ling Xiao. Ling Xiao is furious when he gets home and sees Jian Jian crying. He quarrels with his mother over Jian Jian. Chen Ting accuses him of only caring for his father and neighbors. He retorts that is because they care about him in contrast to her.

Episode 37

Ling Xiao drags Jian Jian out and hugs her tight. He apologizes and doesn’t want her to meet his mother anymore. Jian Jian comforts him in return. Chen Ting now hates Jian Jian even more. She is afraid that Jian Jian will snatch Ling Xiao away from her.

Ming Yue meets up with her mother and apologizes for her behavior. Her mother doesn’t understand why Ming Yue and her father hate her when she just wants the best for them. She thinks Ming Yue just wants to go to Beijing to avoid her. Ming Yue tells her that being a journalist is her dream which is why she wants to go to Beijing. Mother and daughter reconcile after opening up their hearts.

Jian Jian needs to look for an old photo which her sculpture is based on to prove that it is her senior which copied her work instead. Neither she nor Ling Xiao has a copy anymore. They look for Zi Qiu to enquire about his copy but all his old stuff are still at Hua Guang’s house. Mei Ying tells them that Ling Xiao lost his copy because their mother had snipped all his old photos when he wanted to return home after graduation.

Mei Ying assumes that Ling Xiao and Jian Jian hate her. Zi Qiu advises her to think objectively and not to be influenced by her mother. Zi Qiu calls Hua Guang to get back the photo that Jian Jian needs. He agrees to look for it. In exchange, Zi Qiu has to visit his dying grandfather (Hua Guang’s father).

Zhuang Bei brings Tang Can to watch a stage play and then sets her up to meet his director friend. The director wants her to consider a role for his upcoming play.

Episode 38

Mei Ying informs Jian Jian that she will be moving back in with her mother. She apologizes for her past behavior when she was a kid and even gives Jian Jian a gift. Jian Jian tells her that it is long forgotten as there is no reason for her to hold a grudge against a kid. She also advises Mei Ying not to quarrel with her mother.

Zi Qiu chases Hua Guang for the photo but the latter is too busy to look for it. While his cafe is now profitable, it has become a quick meal restaurant rather than one specializing in desserts. Ming Yue’s father is still insistent on divorce although Ming Yue tells him that he is equally to blame for all the problems in the marriage. Her mother is grateful that her daughter speaks up for her.

Chen Ting accuses Mei Ying of being brainwashed when she tells her that she is working at Zi Qiu’s cafe. Mei Ying is unwilling to argue with her. Zhou Miao tries to convince Du Juan to wash her hands off the copyright infringement issue and get Jian Jian to pay the penalty to a client for plagiarism.

Zi Qiu and Jian Jian hears from Hai Chao’s worker about their father’s date with He Mei. Jian Jian is excited but Zi Qiu is afraid their father might get hurt. Zhuang Bei sends Tang Can home and bumps into Ming Yue. Ming Yue apologizes to him for the way she rejected him earlier. She explains that she was fearful as she is someone with a low self-esteem. Zhuang Bei tells her it is already in the past and everyone has their flaws. They return to being friends.

Episode 39

Ming Yue’s mother stays with her for the night. She is crying and Ming Yue comforts as well as assures her that she still has her daughter.

Hai Chao and He Mei go on a date. Jian Jian and Zi Qiu quietly tail them but get discovered. Hai Chao is red-faced and tries to deny that they are dating. But He Mei is forthright and asks for Jian Jian’s and Zi Qiu’s opinion. Jian Jian is excited while Zi Qiu is embarrassed.

Du Juan decides to break up with Zhou Miao as he keeps slandering Jian Jian which she can’t stand. She fires him. Jian Jian comforts her and thinks she has made a good decision.

Zi Qiu visits Hua Guang’s father at the hospital as agreed. He returns the money Hua Guang gave him. All Hua Guan wants is an obedient son. To Zi Qiu, Hua Guang is filial which deserves respect. But they have different values. Their relationship also has no trust because Hua Guang thinks everything can be traded. Zi Qiu gets the photo he asks for. Hua Guang also messages him to say they don’t owe each other anymore and there is no necessity to see each other again.

Tang Can informs her parents about her interest in acting again. Her father is supportive but her mother is against the idea. Shu Ran helps Jian Jian to prove her innocence with the photo from Zi Qiu. He has also dug up all her senior’s plagiarisms and published them online.

Chen Ting invites only Xi Xi to her housewarming dinner. Ming Yue bumps into Ling Xiao and Xi Xi on her way home. Ling Xiao is angry and storms off when his mother tells him that she hates Jian Jian and would not accept her.

Episode 40

Xi Xi clarifies with Chen Ting that she only treats Ling Xiao as a brother. Furthermore, Ling Xiao and Jian Jian are very much in love. Xi Xi forwards the link for Jian Jian’s online post to Chen Ting.

Ming Yue’s parents have divorced. Ming Yue tries not to think about it. Tan Can is rehearsing for her stage play. She wants to convince her mother to accept her career choice through action and achievement. Ming Yue informs Jian Jian that she bumped into Ling Xiao and Xi Xi. She suspects that Chen Ting hates Jian Jian because Jian Jian knows all the skeletons in Chen Ting’s closet. He Mei waits for Zi Qiu to finish work with an umbrella as it is raining.

Ling Xiao has dinner with his father and tells him what happened. He Ping feels bad for being unable to help and regrets not being there for him when he needed him the most. Ling Xiao wonders if his late sister has forgiven him as he has not dreamt of her for quite some time and also if he has paid off his debt to his mother.

Chen Ting reads Jian Jian’s post and is reminded of her past sins. She calls Ling Xiao but He Ping picks up the phone and pleads with her not to pressure their son anymore. Chen Ting writes Ling Xiao a suicide note. She mentions that she has been selfish because she is afraid of losing him. Chen Ting also hates Jian Jian because she reminds her of her past mistakes. She tries to drown herself but is saved by others. When she wakes up in the hospital, Ling Xiao tells her that she should continue living because that is the only way to correct past wrongs.

One Month Later

Chen Ting decides to go back to Singapore with Mei Ying. He Ping sends them to the airport. He apologizes to Chen Ting for his harsh words which led to her attempted suicide and his failure to notice her depression after the death of their daughter. Chen Ting is more accepting of Jian Jian now and asks her to take care of Ling Xiao. Ling Xiao promises Mei Ying that he will visit them in Singapore with Jian Jian during the holidays.

Hai Chao and He Mei are registering their marriage. Zi Qiu tells He Mei that he never expected that one day he will be taking his mother to get married. He will also be transferring his cafe and plans to open a dessert shop in a more suitable location. The whole family and He Ping are in the studio to happily take photos.

Drama With Siblings Relationship

Le Coup de Foudre is another Chinese drama that I could think of that has heartwarming family ties built into the story apart from just romance. It has similar vibes to Go Ahead as it tracks the lives of the main characters from their time in school to their working days as adults. So, viewers can get to see their ups and downs. It is a very relatable story but well-executed on-screen. If you enjoy Go Ahead, I would recommend that you give Le Coup de Foudre a try too! It stars Janice Wu Qian of Skate Into Love and Zhang Yu Jian of The Night Of The Comet 2.
