My Name Is Zhao Chu Xi (我叫赵出息) is not likely to generate a lot of interest among the international audience. After all, it is a drama without the usual idols. Furthermore, the release is pretty low-key without much promotion and fanfare. Neither is it a sweet and fluffy romance drama that could attract younger viewers.
Instead this C-drama tells the story of well, Zhao Chu Xi, who is from the countryside. He was born an orphan. His father sacrificed himself to save others while his mother died after giving birth to him. To honor his guardian’s last wishes to improve their village conditions, Zhao Chu Xi moves from the countryside to the city. He starts as a low level worker in a construction site and subsequently, falls in love with his female boss. He gradually climbs the ranks and becomes successful but also faces struggles and resentments along the way.
The drama doesn’t have any big name stars to rely on but only a good story and solid acting by the cast. Zhao Chu Xi is portrayed by Ray Zhao Ming Yue who has few dramas to his name. Zhang Xin Yu plays his elder sister, Li Qing Yi. You will probably recognize her from past dramas such as Lost In The Kunlun Mountains and Love Designer.
Despite this lack of star power, My Name Is Zhao Chu Xi still managed to garner a Douban score of 9.2 after the first 4 episodes. Whether this high score can be maintained remains to be seen but this is indeed a surprise for such a low profile drama.
